As a self-appointed expert* on teen TV shows and the love triangles they inevitably involve, I like to think I have excellent taste in ships.<\/span><\/p>\n

*By expert I mean I have been watching them obsessively most of my life and have strong opinions as a result.<\/p>\n

From Team Pacey<\/a> to Team Damon, I’m a sucker for the funny, quirky underdog character and tend to root for them over the broody, self-obsessed main character \u2014 and it has always served me well.<\/span><\/p>\n

I know how to pick an endgame, is what I am saying.<\/p>\n

Enter: Jeremiah Fisher and The Summer I Turned Pretty. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

From the first season (and before that, the books), Team Jeremiah was small but mighty. Like, this boy was an actual golden retriever ball of sunshine in human form.<\/span><\/p>\n

He and Belly always had fun together! She could talk to him and joke with him and he always came when she called.<\/span><\/p>\n

He liked Belly for years and waited patiently in the background while she obsessed over Conrad.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Conrad was all distant and unattainable and broody and always upsetting Belly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Admittedly, Belly made very bad and wrong decisions several times that contributed to her relationship with Conrad being a disaster. But let’s focus on the faults of the guys, because Belly’s mess is a whole other topic…<\/p>\n

Like Taylor, I was firmly Team Jellyfish, and mildly dreading Season 3 \u2014 after reading the books, I was high-key hoping they’d change the storyline for the show.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unforunately for me and my faith in my own taste, the show has, overall, remained pretty faithful to the books. And while I was prepared to subsequently be annoyed at Jeremiah and also the show in general, what I was not expecting was to be totally, utterly, converted to Team Conrad (???!!!).<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m sorry Conrad, I did you wrong.<\/p>\n

First of all, let’s get the obvious out of the way \u2014 Season 3 Jeremiah Fisher is a garbagefire trashboy.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s not just the cheating (and yes, it was cheating, no matter how much you say the word “break”, Mr. Ross Gellar Jr.), or the frat-bro-to-finance-bro pipeline, it’s not just the passive aggressive territorial bullshit or the trauma-proposing, it’s not just the irresponsibility and the credit card debt, it’s not even just the goddamn $750 two-layer dark chocolate mirror glaze raspberry coulis wedding cake…although all of those things, individually, are huge red flags that add up to one big ol’ pile of ick<\/a> in boy form.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of all, it’s that Jeremiah has gone from the always-reliable, understanding best friend<\/a> type to this totally unavailable dude who doesn’t seem to know Belly particularly well or put much thought into who she is or what she wants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once again, Belly bears some responsibility for her own appalling choices \u2014 but damn, Jeremiah is bad for her.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Connie baby, this precious sweet cinnamon roll of a man, has been there for Belly the whole season.<\/span><\/p>\n

The forced proximity of them both staying at the summer house is irresistible, but to top it off he’s consistently put Belly’s feelings first and done as much as he can to make her happy and to fix things \u2014 both literally and physically around the house but also, like, EMOTIONALLY \u2014 despite her aforementioned terrible choices and his own nonstop, painful, soulful yearning.<\/span><\/p>\n

I mean, the boy has been downright CHEERFUL in the face of the love of his life planning to marry his dipshit brother. AND he’s done it all for Belly!<\/span><\/p>\n

And also his dipshit brother. But more importantly, for Belly!<\/p>\n

And oh yeah, again, did I mention THE YEARNING?!?!??!?!?!<\/span><\/p>\n

It turns out Conrad is the rightful sweet, charming underdog, and Jeremiah is the self-obsessed, whiny lead guy after all.<\/span><\/p>\n

And here’s the part where I sincerely apologize \u2014 to Conrad, and to everyone who was Team Connie all along. Because, OK, he was a little moody and distant in the first two seasons, but also, like, his mom was dying of cancer and his dad was cheating on her, and he was bearing the burden of that knowledge all alone, which was the only reason Jeremiah was still able to be all goofball sunshine anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n

I mean, all it took was one episode from Conrad’s point of view this season to convince me that, wow, this show can actually be GOOD, and not in a hate-watch kinda way.<\/span><\/p>\n

This season \u2014 and Episode 6 in particular \u2014 has been so enjoyable I’m actually tempted to go back and rewatch the first two seasons with my newfound Conrad-loving wisdom, where previously it took me two days to get through one episode because I could only handle so much cringe at a time.<\/p>\n

Now, as a Taurus, I’m never wrong, and if I am I certainly won’t admit it \u2014 but in this instance, you got me. You got me, Team Conrad. I was completely wrong and I have now seen the error of my ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully, it’s just in time for the endgame.<\/p>\n
