Randy Travis went through quite the ordeal when it came to his health back in 2013. At the time, the country music icon was diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy \u2014 a chronic heart condition that can cause a wide range of symptoms from fatigue to shortness of breath, according to the Mayo Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n While Travis was in the hospital, he suffered a major stroke<\/a> that left him on life support. Despite doctors’ best efforts to relieve swelling around his brain, Travis was in bad shape. He then came down with a couple of other illnesses and his prognosis was grim.<\/p>\n In an interview with Fox News Digital<\/a>, Travis’ wife, Mary shared some of her thought process that led her to go against doctors suggestions to “pull the plug.”<\/p>\n “I think Randy, there was never a doubt in Randy’s mind that he could make it through it. It was that magical moment that I went to his bedside when they said, ‘We need to pull the plug. He’s got too many things going against him at that point.’ He had gotten a staph infection and three other hospital-born bacterial viruses like Serratia, Pseudomonas, one thing after another, and the doctors were just saying, ‘He just doesn’t have the strength to get through this,'” Mary said.<\/p>\n She went on to say that when doctors told her that she should say goodbye to her husband and prepare for the worst, he showed her a sign.<\/p>\n “That was the moment that I knew that Randy Travis was gonna make it because he squeezed my hand and a tear went down his face. And I said, ‘He’s still fighting,'” she said.<\/p>\n Travis did end up making a recovery, but the stroke had a life-changing effect on him. He was diagnosed with aphasia<\/a>, which has greatly impacted his ability to speak \u2014 and sing.<\/p>\n Flash forward to 2025 and Travis, now 66, is still doing okay. In March, he announced an upcoming biopic, titled Forever and Ever, Amen! during an appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. Travis will be portrayed by country artist Clay Walker, according to People magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n Travis has also been on tour, though things certainly look different than they did 20 years ago. Travis has a vocalist \u2014 James Dupr\u00e9 \u2014 who performs his songs with a full band. While Travis and Mary go on stage during the show, their participation is fairly limited.<\/p>\n About a year ago, someone who attended one of Travis’ shows took to Reddit to share the experience.<\/p>\n “I saw the Randy Travis show in Kansas City last night and I thought it was really well done. James Dupre sings his songs for him while Randy and his wife sit on stage listening. In between sets either pre recorded video clips play or Randy’s wife speaks. It was almost a living memorial for Randy Travis. I thought it was the most tasteful tribute I have ever attended. James does a great job covering the songs. If you are a Randy Travis fan and get the chance to go I think it is worth it,” the Redditor wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, Travis was “honored to receive” the ACM Milestone Award.<\/p>\n “Hearing @JameyJohnsonOfficial perform ‘Three Wooden Crosses’ was a special moment! Thanks again to the @ACMawards for the honor.
