Kathy Griffin<\/strong><\/a> has walked back her controversial comedy set about the late Anna Nicole Smith<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAnna Nicole Smith [was] one of the greatest beauties ever of any generation, and she was also very troubled,\u201d Griffin, 64, said in a Wednesday, August 27, YouTube<\/a> video. \u201cAs her career went on, she was very addicted to drugs [and] she overdosed.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the comedian, she knew Smith \u201cfrom putting her in my act\u201d as a stand-up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really loved her,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI was quite vicious to her in my act because she was always f***ed up. I went to her house for Christmas one time, and they filmed it because she used to have a show called The Anna Nicole Show <\/i>on the E! channel. \u2026 I, of course, had real, genuine affection for Anna.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tKathy Griffin has been open about the highs and lows of her life. Born in November 1960, Griffin grew up in Illinois before moving to Los Angeles in 1978. She joined the famous improv troupe The Groundlings before starting her stand-up career in the 1990s. Of course, most fans have seen her on TV as [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Smith, who died in 2007<\/a> after a fatal overdose at the age of 39, invited Griffin and fellow comics Margaret Cho<\/strong> and Rip Taylor<\/strong> to film the holiday special alongside her friends and family.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know, one minute to the next, if she was going to hate me or not based on what I was saying in my act,\u201d Griffin said. \u201cApologies for everything I ever said in the \u201890s and 2000s \u2026 It was a terrible time for women, so I was vicious to Anna<\/a>. I also witnessed a lot of tough times with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cWhen [Anna] was messed up, she could be nasty [and] she could be rough. I know in her heart she was so abused by the business.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Griffin claimed Smith was \u201ca mess\u201d during the party, she also acknowledged that the late model was an exemplary hostess.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was a really good cook [and] made the turkey from scratch<\/a>. She made all the side dishes,\u201d Griffin said. \u201cI kept walking in the kitchen because I kept thinking, \u2018I\u2019m not going to really see Anna Nicole Smith basting a turkey and making the stuffing from scratch.\u2019 \u2026 She was so sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Griffin also noted that Smith was \u201creally, really sweet\u201d when they last saw one another at the 2004 Billboard Music Awards.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was always nervous when I ran into her because, in these days, I was going to every award show,\u201d Griffin said. \u201cI think the last time I saw Anna was at one of those types of shows [when she introduced Kanye West<\/strong>]. \u2026 People were saying, \u2018Oh my God, [she] couldn\u2019t get through the copy.\u2019 Then, other people were saying, She did it on purpose because she\u2019s so smart.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
