{"id":1985819,"date":"2025-08-29T01:12:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T01:12:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=1985819"},"modified":"2025-08-29T01:12:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T01:12:13","slug":"belinda-carlisle-discusses-once-upon-a-time-in-california-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/belinda-carlisle-discusses-once-upon-a-time-in-california-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Belinda Carlisle Discusses &#8216;Once Upon a Time in California&#8217; &#038; More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belinda Carlisle\u2019s latest covers album, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Upon a Time in<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> California<\/em>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is her first English language album in 29 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s previously expressed love for her state of origin through song (see: 1997\u2019s \u201cCalifornia\u201d), but this one<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collates new recordings of songs from the \u201870s that shaped her musical identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The album process began in 2017, with Carlisle estimating that she culled from \u201cprobably about 100 songs\u201d down to the final ten. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because I liked the song didn\u2019t mean it was gonna work. So we would demo everything and see if we could keep the integrity of the song, but make it like a song that I would do \u2013 the sound that I have\u2026 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t was a good eight years in the making.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Once Upon a Time in California<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project was interrupted not only by the global pandemic but also a chance meeting with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-time collaborator Diane Warren (who wrote \u201c<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I_Get_Weak\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Get Weak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Without_You\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Without You<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d for Carlisle\u2019s second solo album, 1987\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heaven on Earth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example), which resulted in the pair\u2019s collaborative five-track <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kismet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> EP (2023).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how did Carlisle typically consume music as a child? \u201cMy mom, she liked show tunes \u2013 Rodgers and Hammerstein and big band music \u2013 and didn\u2019t like the Beatles when they came out \u2013 didn\u2019t like any of that pop music,\u201d she tells us over Zoom. \u201cAnd I loved it. So my transistor radio introduced me to that whole world. And California radio was a big part of the culture at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd I would go to my best friend\u2019s house \u2013 his mother was working \u2013 and after school we\u2019d just go lay in front of the speakers and sing along to every single song that was on the radio. And then during summer it was from 8am to 6pm \u2013 until I had to go home. So that was my life. And it was like music provided an escape for me, into my fantasy world of wanting to be a singer one day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlisle says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Association\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNever My Love\u201d reminds her of \u201cgrowing up in California.\u201d A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Upon a Time in California<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlight, Carlisle\u2019s take on this song commences with some glorious vocal harmonies \u2013 transportive and airy, like a feather caught in a slipstream. \u201cI always loved the song and I wanted to put more of a twist on it,\u201d she explains<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the vocalisation choices. \u201cSo I thought, \u2018Well, maybe let\u2019s do some Beach Boys harmonies and layer vocals.\u2019 So that\u2019s what we did and it totally worked with the song.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form justify-content-center my-3 p-0 d-flex align-items-stretch bg-dark text-white\">\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form-info p-3\" style=\"justify-content: start;\">\n<h2 class=\"h5 mb-0 observer-title\">Love Music?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"observer-desc mb-2\"> Get your daily dose of everything happening in Australian\/New Zealand music and globally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"spinner d-none\"> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\"><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Once Upon a Time in California\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"400\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/40NGxXv0S595f9zdOHrKkJ?si=dSLirJboRhSCaZAYS7WRTQ&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also some outstanding layered vocals in Carlisle\u2019s version of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry Nilsson\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverybody\u2019s Talking\u201d. \u201cThat was fun, super-fun,\u201d Carlisle enthuses. \u201cI think one of my strengths is coming up with background vocal parts, \u2018cause I love doing it so much. And I\u2019m not trained, so I can go way out there and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause the original has that ethereal, very California feel, I wanted to just add that same sort of vocal sound that was such a big part of my childhood. So, yeah, we just went for it, going for that kind of Roy Orbison, Beach Boys, very breezy \u2013 I dunno, we had the idea of doing it in the studio and started playing with the layering. It just totally worked, you know, and I think the original is, of course, incredible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s two Harry Nilsson songs on the album: this one [\u2018Everybody\u2019s Talking\u2019] and \u2018One\u2019. And I knew him, actually, in his later years in California. So I think he\u2019d be proud. I think he\u2019d be happy with it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Belinda Carlisle - One (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/baYKjFKqKfY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the other classic songs Carlisle covers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include Dionne Warwick\u2019s \u201cAnyone Who Had a Heart\u201d, Jim Croce\u2019s \u201cTime in a Bottle\u201d, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albert Hammond\u2019s \u201cThe Air That I Breathe\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you were amongst the t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ens of millions of viewers who tuned in to watch Coachella\u2019s livestream<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the comfort of your couch earlier this year, you hopefully clocked Carlisle\u2019s trailblazing band The Go-Go\u2019s owning the stage. Green Day\u2019s Billie Joe Armstrong even made a surprise guest appearance during their set, which was \u2013 unquestionably \u2013 one of Coachella 2025\u2019s top moments.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Go-Go&#039;s - Unforgiven (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cQIMyDkxdSc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While discussing how chuffed Armstrong looked to be sharing their stage, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlisle points out, \u201cHe\u2019s an old friend of the band, actually. He co-wrote one of our singles, a song called \u2018Unforgiven\u2019 off of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God Bless the Go-Go\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the band\u2019s fourth and final studio album, released in 2001]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Go-Go\u2019s did a Japanese tour with Green Day and so we\u2019re all friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s sort of a [Coachella] tradition to invite somebody to come on stage with you and Green Day was playing the following night, so we thought, \u2018Billie Joe \u2013 perfect!\u2019 I thought it was gonna be \u2018Unforgiven\u2019 \u2013 the song he co-wrote \u2013 but he wanted to do \u2018Head Over Heels\u2019. He has a covers band [The Coverups] and he does \u2018Head Over Heels\u2019, so it worked perfectly. And it was the most incredible experience, I have to say \u2013 it was fabulous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut it was also boiling, boiling hot and our slot was in the heat of the day. There\u2019s this sun hitting the stage \u2013 it was so hot! \u2013 and I go barefoot; it was like dancing on a stove! And at the end of the show, I had blisters all on the bottoms of my feet from the stage being so hot [laughs]. It was intense, but it was so much fun. And seeing \u2013 God! The audience, the demographic, was all over the place. It was young kids and people our age, and everybody knew the music. We were really concerned that nobody was gonna show up \u2013 \u2018cause, you know, \u2018Go-Go\u2019s, old news,\u2019 whatever \u2013 but they showed up for us. And it was 20,000 people the first weekend and, I think, 30 or 40 [thousand] the second weekend. So it was great.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Go-Go\u2019s closed their Coachella set with a genius mash-up, honouring rising star Chappell Roan by interpolating a snippet of \u201cHot to Go\u201d within their own smash hit, 1981\u2019s \u201cWe Got the Beat\u201d. \u201cYeah, uh-huh, that was fun,\u201d Carlisle acknowledges. \u201cThat was Jane <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Wiedlin, Go-Go\u2019s co-founder, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018s idea, but it worked and the audience loved it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The band played a packed Coachella warm-up show at the Roxy, which was the first time the five founding Go-Go\u2019s members performed a public show together in more than seven years. Drummer Gina Schock wasn\u2019t able to participate in their last reunion tour in 2021\/22 (she was recovering from thumb surgery), so Blondie\u2019s drummer Clem Burke stood in. Sadly, Burke passed three days before the all-girl group\u2019s warm-up show at the Roxy, which they in turn dedicated to his memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Go-Go\u2019s were the queens of the LA punk scene, refusing to be alienated or ignored by bro bands that typified the \u201880s. When their sensational debut album, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beauty and the Beat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, topped the Billboard 200 chart in March 1982 (for six consecutive weeks, no less), The Go-Go\u2019s made history as the first all-female group \u2013 who wrote and performed their own songs \u2013 to score a number one album in the US. In 2021, the group was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Go-Go&#039;s - Our Lips Are Sealed\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r3kQlzOi27M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beauty and the Beat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opened with The Go-Go\u2019s smash hit \u201cOur Lips Are Sealed\u201d, which peaked at No. 2 on the Australian charts. When told this writer distinctly remembers mistakenly belting out this song\u2019s chorus as <em>\u201cAlex the seal,\u201d<\/em> Carlisle chuckles. \u201cDid ya? Well, I remember Gina and I went into a radio station \u2013 we were doing promo, the first time The Go-Go\u2019s came to Australia \u2013 and the DJ called it \u2018Alex the Seal\u2019 and I went, \u2018What?\u2019 And so that became kind of a joke. But, yeah! That was very funny. It was a real thing, apparently.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was such a \u2018thing\u2019, in fact, that Spiderbait recorded their own version of The Go-Go\u2019s signature song in 1996, titled \u201cAlex the Seal\u201d \u2013 releasing it as a B-side. \u201cOh, they did?\u201d Carlisle smiles. \u201cThat\u2019s so funny.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alex The Seal (Aka Our Lips Are Sealed)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bhI9q8x2nLE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For her debut solo album, 1986\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belinda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Carlisle recorded a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cover of \u201cStuff and Nonsense\u201d by Split Enz. So how did this legendary New Zealand band land on her radar? \u201cOh, I have a good Split Enz story \u2013 a really good Split Enz story,\u201d she beams. \u201cBut I was a huge fan. It was in 1977, they came to LA and I saw them \u2013 with the brothers [Neil and Tim Finn] \u2013 at the Roxy. It was like theatre; it was the most amazing thing I\u2019d seen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd then that same weekend, I had a party. I was living at this infamous flophouse called Disgraceland with a bunch of girls. So we had a party \u2013 girls only, no boyfriends were allowed. You wore see-through negligees, stilettos, and [ate] fattening foods. We were all drinking and there was music going. Then there was a knock at the door and there was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/dua-lipa-neil-finn-new-zealand-74935\/\" target=\"_blank\">Neil Finn<\/a> and some of the guys from Split Enz! They could not believe that they had just walked into this jackpot of, like, 40 girls in see-through negligees,\u201d she recalls, laughing. \u201cAnd we go, \u2018Come on in!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo they just came in and they were the only guys that were allowed. And when I ran into Neil, like, 10 or 15 years later, he still talks about that party that they just happened to walk into with all these girls \u2013 they couldn\u2019t believe it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think they were pretty awkward, but it was really, really funny. So, yeah! But I love that song [\u2018Stuff and Nonsense\u2019]. I mean, on my Spotify list I have \u2018History Never Repeats\u2019 and \u2018I Hope I Never\u2019.\u201d Carlisle sings a bit of the latter\u2019s exquisite chorus melody, before gushing, \u201cI love that song. It\u2019s such a good song. So, yeah! I\u2019m a big fan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Split Enz - I Hope I Never (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pu98BS7UkHM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlisle\u2019s <em>Lips Unsealed: A Memoir<\/em> was published in 2010. Throughout this unflinching autobiography, she delves into some of the issues that plagued her as The Go-Go\u2019s found international superstardom \u2013 almost from the get-go \u2013 and beyond. As well as substance abuse and eating disorders, Carlisle also struggled with imposter syndrome for many years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat was a big part of my career, up until probably, like, 20 years ago \u2013 before I got sober,\u201d she reflects. \u201cAnd I did a lot of internal work and a lot of therapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI dunno, I just didn\u2019t feel like I was a singer and really deserved that success \u2013 especially in the beginning \u2013 because I had seen all my friends and people struggle for years, and The Go-Go\u2019s happened in three years \u2013 from zero to a hundred. So there\u2019s a lot of guilt with that and it\u2019s like, \u2018I dunno if I deserve this.\u2019 But I remember being on tour during <em>Runaway Horses <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[her third solo studio album, released in 1989] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I looked out my dressing room window at the arena, and there were thousands of people in the queue. And I thought, \u2018Oh my God, they\u2019re coming to see me!\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I would be on stage, I couldn\u2019t even think there were actually people focusing on me and listening to me [laughs] \u2013 it was a weird thing. But then when I got sober, and was concerned about being able to go on stage without a couple of drinks beforehand, to loosen up, I found it to be way easier. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI could connect to the music a lot more and connect to that higher power, that source \u2013 whatever you wanna call it. And, for me, it\u2019s like meditation now. I can go on stage and I do now feel that \u2013 after doing this for 40-odd years \u2013 this is obviously what I\u2019m meant to be doing in life. I know it sounds strange, but for a long time I really didn\u2019t believe that. But I think it has to do with growing up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt [imposter syndrome] was a tough thing, but I don\u2019t feel like that anymore. I mean, I worked really hard to get past that. But it is paralysing, that\u2019s for sure.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlisle\u2019s very relieved that smartphones and social media were not around when she was in peak party mode. \u201cI would\u2019ve been the Lindsay Lohan of my time!\u201d she says, wide-eyed. \u201cOh my God, yeah. And even when everybody had a cell phone, they didn\u2019t have a camera [inbuilt] yet. So that would\u2019ve been the end of me, that\u2019s for sure. Jesus!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were really lucky. None of that was around, so you could behave badly and chances were that no one ever heard about it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artists were almost expected to behave badly, it was considered good for the image back then, right? \u201cExactly. Of course! I always said being a musician is a good excuse to never, never develop, you know? To never grow up. And people expect you to behave badly. And, anyway, they expected ME to behave badly. So that\u2019s what I gave them.
