Outside of Hollywood, del Toro doubles as the sole caretaker of the \u201cBleak House,\u201d which stretches across two and a half Santa Monica homes packed wall-to-wall with thousands of ghoulish creatures, iconic comic art, books and movie props.<\/p>\n
The multipurpose houses are complete amalgams of museums, libraries and workspaces all wrapped into one, where most of del Toro\u2019s massive collection is stored.<\/p>\nThe \u201cBleak House\u201d was almost destroyed by the Los Angeles wildfires. Invision<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIn a house tour with the Associated Press, \u201cThe Shape of Water\u201d filmmaker showed off a \u201cHaunted Mansion\u201d-themed dining room complete with life-sized figures he would \u201csay hi to\u201d whenever he entered.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is curated. This is not a casual collection,\u201d he explained. <\/p>\n
The entire assemblage nearly went up in flames in January as the Los Angeles wildfires inched toward the homes. Del Toro had mere hours to empty out thousands of pieces of memorabilia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat came out of it? You collected insurance? And what happened to that little segment of Richard Corben\u2019s life, or Jack Kirby\u2019s craft, or Bernie Wrightson\u2019s life?\u201d Del Toro recalled thinking.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, this is in reaction to the fires. This is in reaction to loving this thing,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
That, and the \u201cPan\u2019s Labryinth\u201d director added, unloading some of the works will make it easier for him to care for the houses and the rest of the collection. He currently spends most of his days at the \u201cBleak House,\u201d ensuring that the impressive collection isn\u2019t being hit by direct sunlight and that temperature is still stable in the homes. <\/p>\n
Del Toro isn\u2019t burdened by the responsibility, though. <\/p>\n
\u201cAs collectors, you are basically keeping pieces of culture for generations to come. They\u2019re not yours,\u201d he mused. \u201cWe don\u2019t know which of the pieces you\u2019re holding is going to be culturally significant \u2026 100 years from now, 50 years from now. So that\u2019s part of the weight.\u201d<\/p>\n
