Netflix and … nah, for real? <\/p>\n
That\u2019s what many fans of the popular streaming app are saying this week \u2014 and that might be kind \u2014 after news broke that one of the streaming platform\u2019s most watched new series, \u201cThe Waterfront<\/a>\u201d, isn\u2019t returning for a second season.<\/p>\n And folks are not happy that Netflix chose to cancel it. <\/p>\n According to Deadline<\/a>, the streamer felt the show didn\u2019t have enough viewership and completion rate \u2013 the number of fans who start a show and then watch it all the way until the end \u2013 to move forward with a renewal. It spent five weeks in Netflix\u2019s worldwide Top 10 for English-language series. <\/p>\n \u201c<\/i>The Waterfront\u201d<\/i> starred Holt McCallany, Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist and Maria Bello, and followed the drama of a prominent fishing family that has fallen on hard times after their patriarch has suffered a series of health setbacks. The family members end up turning to crime in order to try to preserve their status.<\/p>\n The series was the latest offering from screenwriter, director and producer Kevin Williamson, whose other television credits include \u201cDawson\u2019s Creek,\u201d \u201cThe Vampire Diaries,\u201d \u201cThe Following\u201d and more.<\/p>\n Williamson is also responsible for launching big-screen projects including \u201cScream\u201d and \u201cI Know What You Did Last Summer.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n The drama has often been compared to \u201cYellowstone<\/a>\u201d due to its focus on the internal dynamics of family, its strong but difficult patriarch and unclear morals that underlies the family\u2019s actions. <\/p>\n Slate<\/a> described the show as being, \u201clike Yellowstone, but set in North Carolina,\u201d while CBR<\/a> viewed it as a \u201cYellowstone-like crime series\u201d that was \u201csurprisingly good.\u201d <\/p>\n Meanwhile Collider<\/a> coined the show a \u201cYellowstone replacement.\u201d <\/p>\n Regardless, fans were blindsided by the show\u2019s shocking cancellation. Many turned to social media to vent about the decision. <\/p>\n \u201cNetflix is insane for canceling the waterfront no one can tell me otherwise. bree\u2019s storyline genuinely made me feel so seen and understood and idk what tf their problem is,\u201d one user<\/a> wrote. <\/p>\n \u201cThe Waterfront being canceled is actually so dumb. @netflix you will be dealt with,\u201d another user<\/a> wrote. <\/p>\n Williamson also took to his Instagram Stories<\/a> amid the bad news, noting that doing the show, \u201cone of the best experiences of my life.\u201d <\/p>\n The post has since expired.<\/p>\n \u201cA big thank you to everyone who watched The Waterfront.
