By Andy Kahn<\/a><\/strong> Aug 29, 2025 \u2022<\/span> 6:49 am PDT<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n In January, Alabama Shakes<\/a> shared photos of the band at Nashville\u2019s Sound Emporium recording studio captioned, \u201cWorking on some exciting stuff!\u201d<\/a> The recently reunited group shared the first taste of those sessions by releasing the single, \u201cAnother Life,\u201d their first new original music in 10 years. <\/p>\n The Brittany Howard<\/a>-fronted group\u2019s most recent album was their Grammy-winning 2015 sophomore effort, Sound & Color<\/em>. Alabama Shakes recorded a cover of \u201cKiller Diller\u201d for the 2017 film The American Epic Sessions<\/em>. <\/p>\n The band went on hiatus in 2018 and Howard\u2019s solo album Jaime<\/em>, was issued the following year. Howard\u2019s follow-up, What Now<\/em> was released in 2024.<\/p>\n Alabama Shakes embarked on a tour this year<\/a>, after reuniting during a surprise appearance last December<\/a>. Howard was joined by bassist Zac Cockrell<\/strong> and guitarist Heath Fogg<\/strong> for their first public performance since 2017. Drummer Steve Johnson, who faced serious legal charges during the band\u2019s hiatus, has not been involved in the new endeavors. <\/p>\n Producer\/engineer Shawn Everett teamed up with Alabama Shakes on \u201cAnother Life.\u201d Everett worked with Howard on Jaime<\/em> and What Now<\/em>.<\/p>\n Howard provided a statement regarding the first new Alabama Shakes song in a decade:<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n \u201cWhen we wrote \u2018Another Life,\u2019 I was thinking about all the lives we carry. The ones we\u2019re living right now, the ones that slipped away because of different choices, the what ifs, the what wasn\u2019t meant to be, the goodbyes, and the chance encounters that feel divine.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis song is about those threads and how they stretch across time and space, connecting every version of who we are. It\u2019s about letting them come together, letting them harmonize, and realizing that goodbye isn\u2019t really goodbye. It\u2019s more like I\u2019ll see you later. A collective story that never stops unfolding.
