McCardie passed away at the age of 59 at home in 2024 from an aortic dissection, a condition in which a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body&#8217;s main artery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Going back to an episode of <em>Eastenders<\/em> in 1989, McCardie\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0564947\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:body of work;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><u>body of work<\/u><\/a> included roles in movies such as <em>Rob Roy<\/em> and <em>Speed 2: Cruise Control<\/em> as well as Showtime\u2019s <em>Shameless<\/em>. He first joined the <em>Outlander<\/em> universe in 2015 when he was cast as Sir Marcus MacRannoch, a manor owner who helps Claire (Caitr\u00edona Balfe) break Jamie (Sam Heughan) free from Wentworth Prison in season one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Given it was such a small part, the showrunners must have felt comfortable recasting him in a completely new role in the same world and timeline. In <em>Blood of My Blood<\/em>, he played the ruthless Isaac Grant, one of the only lairds that the MacKenzie brothers seem to genuinely fear insulting.
