In other words it was 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AZNYFRVWQVEKVF3ADCXWSK2VUI\">That summer, soul-rock band the Shakes released \u201cKiller Diller Blues,\u201d as part of a PBS documentary \u201cThe American Epic Sessions\u201d co-produced by musician <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life-and-culture\/erry-2018\/11\/b7d605c3f89173\/jack-white-alabama-shakes-want.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life-and-culture\/erry-2018\/11\/b7d605c3f89173\/jack-white-alabama-shakes-want.html\">Jack White<\/a>. \u201cKiller Diller Blues,\u201d a cover of Memphis Minnie &#8212; a 1940s singer\/guitarist best known for her posthumously <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2025\/02\/led-zeppelin-legendary-rock-bands-top-10-underrated-songs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2025\/02\/led-zeppelin-legendary-rock-bands-top-10-underrated-songs.html\">Led Zeppelin<\/a>-famed song \u201cWhen the Levee Breaks\u201d &#8212; won Alabama Shakes their fourth <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2024\/02\/which-alabama-music-star-has-the-most-grammy-wins-the-answer-might-surprise-you.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Grammy<\/a> in nine nominations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CT76PW5PZZCJVJR6PTSGO527GI\">Eight years later, Alabama Shakes have dropped a new track, \u201cAnother Life.\u201d It\u2019s actually the band\u2019s first <i>original<\/i> song since Grammy-winning <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/entertainment\/2015\/04\/alabama_shakes_sound_color.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/entertainment\/2015\/04\/alabama_shakes_sound_color.html\">2015 album \u201cSound &amp; Color,\u201d <\/a>which boasted the singles \u201cDon\u2019t Wanna Fight,\u201d \u201cGimme All Your Love\u201d and \u201cFuture People.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NJJ7CNL2OBC35JQWI775M4R7LI\">Sonically, \u201cAnother Life\u201d evokes the prismatic R&amp;B of \u201cSound &amp; Color.\u201d The song finds Shakes singer\/guitarist Brittany Howard cooing in a Curtis Mayfield style falsetto. In a new <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/08\/29\/nx-s1-5521272\/alabama-shakes-new-song-another-life-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">interview with NPR<\/a>, Howard says of the new song, \u201cIt reminds me of the Guess Who, or even early Tom Jones. It\u2019s something that I was really excited by: Orchestrated \u201960s guitar rock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FIOEERTDWRCJHJ2IIK7VBXAPZY\">In a statement to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/alabama-shakes-share-first-new-song-in-10-years-listen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Pitchfork<\/a>, Howard details the song\u2019s lyrical themes: \u201cWhen I wrote \u2018Another Life,\u2019 I was thinking about all the lives we carry. The ones we\u2019re living right now, the ones that slipped away because of different choices, the what ifs, the what wasn\u2019t meant to be, the goodbyes, and the chance encounters that feel divine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7VWQY76AUNHSBEGCCJE3O5EQOE\">\u201cThis song is about those threads and how they stretch across time and space, connecting every version of who we are. It\u2019s about letting them come together, letting them harmonize, and realizing that goodbye isn\u2019t really goodbye. It\u2019s more like I\u2019ll see you later. A collective story that never stops unfolding. Howard, who embarked on an acclaimed solo career in 2019, and bassist Zac Cockrell, who\u2019d been part of Howard\u2019s solo band, reconnected with Shakes guitarist <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2020\/06\/ever-wonder-how-alabama-shakes-would-sound-without-brittany.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2020\/06\/ever-wonder-how-alabama-shakes-would-sound-without-brittany.html\">Heath Fogg<\/a> for a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2025\/02\/iconic-band-reunites-for-first-tour-in-8-years-including-alabama-show.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2025\/02\/iconic-band-reunites-for-first-tour-in-8-years-including-alabama-show.html\">reunion tour<\/a> of amphitheaters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5EX3SS3X2NG7BCW67OGYJ6WW2E\">But the tour\u2019s a \u201cthree-union\u201d not a true reunion. The Shakes\u2019 original drummer Steve Johnson was left out of the lucrative tour, telling AL.com he\u2019d been <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2025\/01\/alabama-shakes-drummer-on-why-he-was-left-out-of-bands-reunion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">ousted from the band due to legal issues he had during the band\u2019s hiatus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L6EZ54BITVE57GMR62OIBIZRNM\">No word yet on who plays drums on new song \u201cAnother Life.\u201d But Nashville percussionist Lewis Wright has been behind the kit on the current Shakes tour. Howard, Fogg and Cockrell are working on a new album. Howard tells NPR, \u201cI feel like there may be a few songs that group similarly together, like, they sound like they belong in the same world. But for the most part, we just did whatever we wanted to. There\u2019s some stuff that reminds me of garage Sly Stone. And there\u2019s some things that I don\u2019t know exactly what genre it would be.
