Hailey Bieber, 28, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2025\/05\/20\/parents\/hailey-bieber-reveals-she-suffered-deadly-postpartum-complication-after-son-jacks-birth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently recalled<\/a> her \u201cscary\u201d experience with PPH after giving birth last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trust my doctor with my life,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I was bleeding really badly, and people die, and the thought crosses your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hailey Bieber said she experienced postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) after giving birth to son Jack Blues Bieber last year.  <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/Hailey Bieber<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>PPH is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide, accounting for about 70,000 deaths annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause a mother\u2019s entire blood volume can pass through the uterus in just eight to 11 minutes at term, heavy bleeding can escalate rapidly,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.callawomenshealth.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Kameelah Phillips<\/a>, a board-certified OB\/GYN, founder of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.callawomenshealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calla Women\u2019s Health<\/a> on the Upper East Side and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.organon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Organon Health<\/a> Partner, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout prompt treatment, PPH can lead to severe complications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phillips warns of two complications during childbirth that can lead to PPH \u2014 and highlights an innovative treatment method.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inside PPH<\/h2>\n<p>A woman\u2019s uterus is the supportive home for her growing fetus \u2014 and when it\u2019s time to evict the little one, the uterus contracts forcefully during labor to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p>It continues to contract after delivery to expel the placenta \u2014 which provided nutrients and oxygen to the baby \u2014 and to clamp off the blood vessels that supplied the placenta.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s supposed to minimize bleeding \u2014 but if the contractions aren\u2019t strong enough, PPH can occur.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Dr. Kameelah Phillips, a board-certified OB\/GYN and founder of Calla Women\u2019s Health, warns of two complications during childbirth that can lead to PPH \u2014 and highlights an innovative treatment method. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Dr. Kameelah Phillips<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Some bleeding is normal. PPH is generally defined as blood loss over 500<em> <\/em>milliliters (mL) following vaginal birth and over 1,000 mL after a cesarean section.<\/p>\n<p>PPH risk factors include being black, over 30 and obese and having anemia, high blood pressure, a prior cesarean delivery, placental abnormalities and unusually long labor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecognizing early warning signs early is critical,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cYour healthcare team will be looking for heavy or uncontrolled bleeding, large blood clots or a drop in your blood pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding the four Ts<\/h2>\n<p>Healthcare providers have a mnemonic for the four main causes of PPH, known as the four Ts, which stand for tone, trauma, tissue and thrombin.<\/p>\n<p>Tone refers to uterine atony, the most common cause of PPH, responsible for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK499988\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roughly 70% of cases<\/a>. It occurs when the uterine muscles don\u2019t contract properly after childbirth.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Doctors look for looking for heavy or uncontrolled bleeding, large blood clots or a drop in blood pressure, which could indicate PPH. <span class=\"credit\">New Africa \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Trauma to the birth canal, such as lacerations or a ruptured uterus, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ijgo.14116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accounts for about 15% to 20%<\/a> of cases.<\/p>\n<p>Tissue, including fragments of the placenta or blood clots that remain in the uterus and prevent it from contracting adequately, has been linked to 10% of cases.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, thrombin is needed for normal blood clotting. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ausmed.com\/learn\/articles\/postpartum-haemorrhage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Very few<\/a> PPH cases are due to clotting disorders.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shoulder dystocia<\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/02\/07\/news\/georgia-babys-decapitation-during-birth-ruled-a-homicide\/\">Shoulder dystocia<\/a> falls into the \u201ctrauma\u201d category because it often requires forceful maneuvers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is when, after the baby\u2019s head is delivered, one or both shoulders get stuck behind the mother\u2019s pubic bone, making it difficult for the rest of the body to come out,\u201d Phillips said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis can happen [with] larger babies, mothers with diabetes or a history of shoulder\u00a0dystocia,\u201d she added. \u201cIt can also happen spontaneously [in] women with no risk factors.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Suprapubic pressure (shown here) is a maneuver used to address shoulder dystocia. <span class=\"credit\">Wikipedia \/ Hariadhi<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Though shoulder dystocia can occur without warning, there is a crucial visual clue that doctors look for: The \u201cturtle sign\u201d is a rare yet urgent indicator signaling an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is when the head retracts back against the perineum after the head is delivered, much like a turtle pulling into its shell,\u201d Phillips explained.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retained placenta<\/h2>\n<p>If a placenta is not delivered within 30 minutes of the baby\u2019s birth, it is considered a retained placenta.<\/p>\n<p>A retained placenta \u2014 or even just some of its remaining tissue \u2014 can prevent the uterus from contracting effectively and can lead to serious infection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore leaving the hospital, you will be advised to look out for heavy vaginal bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, fever or chills,\u201d Phillips said about infection clues. \u201cOther important signs include severe cramping or pain in the lower abdomen.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introducing the JADA System<\/h2>\n<p>PPH treatment focuses on stopping the bleeding, with methods like uterine massage to stimulate contractions, medications to help contract the uterus or balloon devices that apply pressure to the uterine walls.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>This shows how the JADA device is used to stop bleeding in PPH. <span class=\"credit\">Organon<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>In severe cases, the mother may need a blood transfusion, surgery to extract retained placental tissue or a hysterectomy to remove the uterus altogether.<\/p>\n<p>One tool that has seen widespread adoption in recent years is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/organonpro.com\/en-us\/product\/the-jada-system\/the-jada-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the JADA System<\/a>. The US Food and Drug Administration <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK596675\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first cleared it<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe JADA System works by using low-level vacuum to encourage the uterus to contract as it naturally should after birth,\u201d Phillips said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a clinical study, the median time to control bleeding was just about three minutes, and about 94% of participants experienced successful treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hailey Bieber revealed that a JADA device helped stop her \u201creally bad\u201d bleeding after <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/24\/entertainment\/justin-and-hailey-bieber-welcome-new-baby-jack-blue-bieber\/\">giving birth to son<\/a> Jack Blues Bieber in August 2024.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/hailey-bieber-summer-cover-2025-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">She told Vogue<\/a> in May that the treatment lasted hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to hold my baby.
