Venice Film Festival<\/a>; and director David Leitch\u2019s heist adventure \u201cHow to Rob a Bank.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cWe focus on asking, \u2018Does this project have an audience that\u2019s reachable? Is that audience going to go to theaters to see it?\u2019\u201d Brody says. \u201cMy theory is you want to either steer toward IP or something unique.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cAfter the Hunt\u201d falls in the latter category. Brody describes the #MeToo-themed story as a \u201cthoughtful and complicated film about real, true, multi-dimensional human beings; their foibles, pleasures, angers and ways we get in our own way.\u201d And he wants the Venice premiere of \u201cAfter the Hunt\u201d to spark a dialogue among festival-goers and beyond. \u201cThis movie is a conversation piece,\u201d Brody says. <\/p>\n
\n\tImagine, which has a first-look deal with Amazon MGM, is also leaning into new ideas with \u201cWhalefall,\u201d which takes place almost entirely in the belly of a whale, and \u201c200 Monas,\u201d a dark comedy about women who take orgasm pills, the latter of which Brody says, is \u201cnot an old-fashioned studio movie.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tIn the realm of familiar properties, Imagine is developing a movie based on the TV show \u201c24\u201d at Disney\u2019s 20th Century Studios, a \u201cSpaceballs\u201d sequel starring Josh Gad and produced by Mel Brooks at Amazon MGM, as well as a Snoop Dogg biopic at Universal.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re in the business of big IP,\u201d Brody says. \u201cThere\u2019s a significant understanding of what people want from them, so all we have to do is deliver. That\u2019s never easy, but if you put the right filmmakers and creatives and the right love into it, you can get it there.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThere\u2019s also a concerted effort at the production company to nurture rising talent, like first-time screenwriter Nora Garret (\u201cAfter the Hunt\u201d) and filmmaker Brian Duffield (\u201cWhalefall\u201d). \u201cWe take great pride in harnessing the 40-year legacy of Imagine to back the next wave of artists, who we believe are the future of our industry,\u201d says Allan Mandelbaum, who works with Brody as executive VP of features.<\/p>\n
\n\tNot every bold bet pays off. Howard\u2019s survival thriller \u201cEden,\u201d for example, struggled to find distribution after its Toronto Intl. Film Festival premiere. After mixed reviews, the $35 million-budgeted movie, starring Jude Law, Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney, ultimately fizzled in theaters with $1 million in its box office debut.<\/p>\n
\n\tBrody believes his strength is that he\u2019s seen the business from all vantage points. Before he joined the team at Imagine, he served as president of production at both Steven Spielberg\u2019s Amblin Partners and Focus Features, and worked a producer, helping to develop such movies as the Sam Mendes\u2019 war drama \u201c1917,\u201d the \u201cFifty Shades of Grey\u201d franchise and \u201cLittle Miss Sunshine.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI can see the different sides of the coin,\u201d Brody says. \u201cI was always hesitant about being a seller until I was lucky enough to become one. And then I realized, \u2018Oh, those [other] skills I have are quite beneficial.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThat adaptive mindset has been beneficial in weathering the ebbs and flows of a movie business in flux.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cOn the one hand it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh my God, it\u2019s never been harder.\u2019 And on the other hand, that sentence has probably been uttered by every generation of producers or studio executives,\u201d Brody says. \u201cAnd yet, we keep making movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
