Spoiler alert: This story contains details from \u201cThe Roses.\u201d If you\u2019d feel thorny about having bits shared with you before you see the movie, plant yourself in a theater and then come back.<\/strong><\/p>\n Kathleen Turner had a prediction<\/a> for a new adaptation of Warren Adler\u2019s novel \u201cThe <\/a>War of the Roses<\/a>.\u201d In contrast to her original 1989 film, the embattled couple would survive.<\/p>\n Was she right or wrong?<\/p>\n If you\u2019ve seen \u201cThe Roses<\/a>,\u201d you might be wondering what happens after the final scene. Is there a chance the recently reunited Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo Rose (Benedict Cumberbatch)<\/a> escape death, or do they succumb to a fire?<\/p>\n As in the first film, in which Turner costarred with Michael Douglas<\/a>, they’re an estranged couple who begin annihilating each other, dead set on ownership of their home. Ivy, a successful restauranteur, paid for it. Theo, an architect, meticulously designed the stunning house, and he wants to keep it \u2212 so badly, in fact, that he\u2019s willing to poison Ivy with raspberries, to which she\u2019s deathly allergic.<\/p>\n 1<\/span> of 31<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are the quarreling couple at the heart of “The Roses.”<\/a> See which stars stepped out for the movie’s red carpet premiere on Monday, Aug. 25, in New York.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Kicking off the film’s climax, Theo offers Ivy a bit of Black Forest cake, in which he has hidden the fatal raspberries. When Ivy begins experiencing anaphylaxis, Theo slides papers in her direction that would give him ownership of the property. Ivy signs, and he stabs her with a dose of epinephrine before realizing she has scribbled Zendaya’s signature.<\/p>\n Theo says he wouldn\u2019t have let Ivy die, but she’s unconvinced and retrieves a gun. She tells Theo to leave or she\u2019ll shoot, and she alarms him by firing. Unarmed, he tosses oranges her way, and the fighting continues. He hurls a knife at Ivy and starts beating the top of a stove once owned by Julia Child<\/a> with its grate. The battle continues until Theo admits he never stopped loving Ivy, which softens her gun-toting heart.<\/p>\n \u201cWhy leave me, then?\u201d she asks.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause you hated me, and I couldn\u2019t bear it,\u201d he replies.<\/p>\n \u201cThe truth is, I doubt I could live without you, anyway,\u201d he confesses.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd I, you,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n \u201cSo, murder-suicide pact then?\u201d he teases, which gets Ivy to drop her gun. The two embrace in their bedroom and apologize. And you might think they\u2019ll get a happy ending until gas begins leaking from the battered stove, snaking its way to their room.<\/p>\n Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch try couples therapy to save their marriage in “The Roses.”<\/p>\n \u201cDeath do us part\u201d they vow, and they kiss. Then Theo directs their digital home assistant to play their song and put on a fire before the screen goes white.<\/p>\n Cumberbatch says Ivy and Theo were able to come together because \u201cunderneath it all, the hate is from how much they desperately love each other, and that’s the real tragedy that seems to be going on.\u201d<\/p>\n Vulnerability, he says, is the couple\u2019s superpower. “I think that\u2019s something I could (use) more of \u2212 that ability to just be so open and honest, at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n The costars are coy about the finality of their deaths but are willing to indulge the hope that the Roses smell the gas and escape.<\/p>\n \u201cThey live happily ever after,\u201d Cumberbatch says with a laugh.<\/p>\n \u201cThey smell it,\u201d Colman says, playing along. \u201cThey all get out.\u201d<\/p>\n For the majority of their relationship, Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Olivia Colman) are madly in love.<\/p>\nSee Olivia Colman, Benedict Cumberbatch step out for ‘The Roses’ red carpet<\/h2>\n
