Riz Ahmed<\/strong> was hospitalized<\/a> while filming 2016\u2019s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story <\/i>\u2014 an experience that later helped him connect to his acclaimed role in The Sound of Metal.<\/i><\/p>\n \u201cAround the time of taking on Sound of Metal, <\/i>I had a very intense health-related experience myself,\u201d Ahmed, 42, said on the Thursday, August 28, episode of the \u201cPodcrushed\u201d podcast<\/a>, referring to his 2019 movie about a drummer who loses his hearing. \u201cI had to grapple with the grief but also the acceptance around that.\u201d<\/p>\n Ahmed recalled to podcast host Penn Badgley<\/strong> that he was \u201cin the middle of filming\u201d Rogue One <\/i>when he felt off internally.<\/p>\n \u201cMy body just, kind of, gave up on me,\u201d he said. \u201cI was extremely exhausted, [and] I was hospitalized for a brief period. I just had to really try and retrain my strength. It was, like, building myself up from scratch. It was super scary and intense and quite prolonged, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n Ahmed continued, \u201cFor a minute, I was, like, \u2018Am I ever going to get my life back?\u2019 It really wasn\u2019t clear. Something very silent and very intense had happened to me, and I wasn\u2019t getting better<\/a> quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n While hospital-bound, Ahmed said that he felt a \u201cdeep kind of grief and fear and terror.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201c[I also felt] a tremendous liberation and gratitude and acceptance,\u201d he noted. \u201cSomeone told me that cancer patients, once they\u2019ve recovered<\/a>, say, \u2018You know what? I\u2019m so glad I\u2019m better, but I wish I could bottle that slightly zen-like gratitude I had when I lost everything.\u2019 I always think that when you\u2019re brought to your knees, you\u2019re halfway to praying.\u201d<\/p>\n Ahmed added, \u201cYou\u2019re humbled in that way when something is taken away from you, you become even more acutely aware of everything you have.\u201d<\/p>\n The British actor further noted that, \u201con a health level,\u201d it was difficult not to have \u201ccontrol\u201d over his body.<\/p>\n
