\n <\/div>\n\n Photo: Rodin Eckenroth\/WireImage<\/span>\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n Over the past few weeks, Sydney Sweeney has been in the news quite a bit \u2014 for her much-discussed American Eagle jeans ad<\/a>, her apparent political leanings<\/a>, and for maybe dating Machine Gun Kelly<\/a>. What hasn\u2019t been making quite as many headlines? Her new movie. Americana, an indie crime thriller, has been widely deemed a commercial flop after making just $500,000<\/a> its opening weekend.<\/p>\n Now, Halsey, who co-stars in the movie with Sweeney, is sticking up for Americana and encouraging fans to see it. In a post to their Instagram story, Halsey downplayed the controversy over Sweeney\u2019s jeans ad, calling it \u201cthe 24 hr gossip tabloid denim bullshit,\u201d per \u201cPage Six<\/a>.\u201d \u201cYou should go see this movie,\u201d the singer wrote, sharing an image of Americana\u2019s poster. Halsey lauded the director, Tony Tost, saying he \u201cmade an exceptional film, in honor of a genre he knows intimately\u201d and called him an \u201cincredible artist who made a great film with a group of hardworking, talented people.\u201d \u201cIf you love cinema, then you should know that cinema comes first. This is cinema,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n In another post, Halsey again threw their support behind Tost and the crew, per Deadline<\/a>. \u201cI do agree that our words are important in this climate,\u201d they wrote. \u201cI don\u2019t, however, think that it\u2019s fair for the news cycle to predatorily rip a hardworking director and his hardworking crew for their film that is completely separate-from and unrelated-to a (pretty dumb) advertising take.\u201d<\/p>\n Tost himself has acknowledged the movie\u2019s rough debut, seemingly also blaming it on Sweeney\u2019s ad. In an X post<\/a> on Friday, Tost said Americana had been \u201cgobbled up by the zeitgeist.\u201d \u201cOne of the great things about movies is that they outlive the zeitgeist into which they were released,\u201d he said. \u201cAs someone whose first film sorta got gobbled up by the zeitgeist, I\u2019ll be curious to see how it\u2019ll stand up after this moment is over.
