Lil Nas X<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s father, Robert Stafford<\/strong>, has revealed an emotional jail visit with his son following the \u201cOld Town Road\u201d rapper\u2019s recent arrest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to visit him in jail and as soon as I walked through that door, I couldn\u2019t do anything but cry,\u201d Stafford told London\u2019s The Times<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Friday, August 29. \u201cTo see my baby boy on the other side of that glass. We shed tears with each other for a minute. And I had to tell him that \u2018what you\u2019re going through is normal.\u2019 We all have breakdowns every now and then, but the difference is, yours get played out in the public eye.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lil Nas X (real name Montero Lamar Hill) was arrested in the early hours of August 21 when he was found wandering the streets of Los Angeles. Viral footage shot before the arrest showed Lil Nas wearing a traffic cone on his head. He was hospitalized, but later charged with four felonies \u2014 three counts of battery with injury to a police officer and one count of resisting arrest \u2014 over police allegations that he tried to \u201cbatter an officer.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two-time Grammy Award winner was eventually released on a $75,000 bond ahead of a pretrial hearing on September 15. He has hired powerhouse attorney Drew Findling<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 who previously represented Donald Trump<\/strong> in an election interference case \u2014 as his legal counsel.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLil Nas X reflected on a \u201cpretty difficult\u201d past few years in a video shared via social media in February, six months before his arrest for allegedly assaulting a police officer. \u201cThese last few years were pretty difficult for me,\u201d he said in the video. \u201cI\u2019m just now arriving to this place of feeling confidence [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Prior to his bond release, he was visited at the Valley Jail in Van Nuys, California, by his father. Stafford, a gospel musician, theorized in his interview with the U.K. publication that Lil Nas X buckled under the responsibility of being a \u201cbreadwinner for a lot of people\u201d and the \u201cpressure he puts on himself\u201d to surpass his previous career successes. (Lil Nas X has spent the last three years working on the follow-up to his 2021 debut album Montero<\/em>, which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went two-times platinum in the U.S.)<\/p>\n

Stafford remembered one particularly powerful moment during his jailhouse reunion where Lil Nas X asked his father to pass along a message to fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I went to visit, he asked me to say, \u2018tell everybody I\u2019m sorry they saw me like that,\u2019\u201d Stafford recalled. \u201cEven in that moment, he was apologizing to people for something he was going through.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Lil Nas X\u2019s father expressed hope that the musician\u2019s arrest would be \u201ca turning point in his mental stability.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes, God will take you through your worst moment to give you your best moment,\u201d Stafford pointed out.<\/p>\n

Stafford previously told reporters<\/a> outside the Van Nuys jail that his son \u201cabsolutely [did] not\u201d have any \u201cillegal drugs\u201d in his system at the time of his arrest.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s very remorseful for what happened, but it can happen to any family. He\u2019s going to get the help that he needs,\u201d Stafford told reporters. \u201cAnd just keep him in your prayers. Give him the same grace and mercy that God gives everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
