Stephen King<\/a> is not known for being precious about his novels.<\/p>\n There are nearly as many film and television adaptations of the prolific author\u2019s works as there are books, ranging from masterful turns by Stanley Kubrick to laughable takes on \u201cThe Dark Tower\u201d and \u201cThe Lawnmower Man.\u201d (The less said about King\u2019s own movie adaptation, \u201cMaximum Overdrive,\u201d the better.) Still, when it came time to adapt \u201cThe Long Walk<\/a>,\u201d the 77-year-old had one big demand: we needed to see the teenage protagonists getting shot.<\/p>\n Written during the Vietnam War<\/a>, \u201cWalk\u201d takes place in a dystopian future where 100 young men compete annually in an endurance competition. The walkers keep a grueling pace of 4 miles per hour and are trailed by soldiers. The soldiers shoot anyone who falls below the required pace three times. The last person standing wins. Speaking to The Times of London<\/a>, King said he required the upcoming film adaptation to show blood, calling the bloodless violence of superhero movies \u201cpornographic.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf you look at these superhero movies, you\u2019ll see \u2026 some supervillain who\u2019s destroying whole city blocks, but you never see any blood,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd man, that\u2019s wrong\u2026 I said, if you\u2019re not going to show it, don\u2019t bother. And so they made a pretty brutal movie.\u201d<\/p>\n King also discussed his other dystopias, particularly \u201cThe Running Man.\u201d Released in 1982 and set in 2025, it predicts a totalitarian America in which citizens are declared enemies of the state by a game show and forced to run from law enforcement and elite assassins.
