After complaining about LGBTQ representation in movies like Lightyear<\/a><\/em>, Snoop Dogg<\/a> is offering something of an apology.<\/p>\n \u201cI was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,\u201d Snoop wrote in a recent Instagram comment<\/a>, after saying he was upset after same-sex characters in Lightyear<\/em> spurred questions from his grandson. \u201cAll my gay friends [know] what\u2019s up. They been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-year-old. Teach me how to learn. I\u2019m not perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n The rapper sparked outrage after making the comments in an It\u2019s Giving<\/em> podcast episode<\/a> shared online on August 20. In that episode, he recalled taking his grandson to see Lightyear<\/em> and fielding his questions about two characters in a same-sex relationship.<\/p>\n \u201cMy grandson, in the middle of the movie, is like, \u2018Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She is a woman!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Snoop\u2019s reaction? \u201cOh, s***. I didn\u2019t come in for this s***,\u201d he said on the podcast. \u201cI just came to watch the g**damn movie.\u201d<\/p>\n But Snoop said his grandson didn\u2019t relent, asking, \u201cThey just said she and she had a baby. They both women. Why is that such a difficult concept to grasp?\u201d<\/p>\n Some people even called for the Grammy-nominated artist to be dropped as a performer from Australia\u2019s AFL Grand Final football match, according to 9 News Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n Snoop\u2019s comments likely opened old wounds for LGBTQ Disney employees and moviegoers, who saw a same-sex kiss between Uzo Aduba<\/a>\u2019s character and her partner edited out and then reinstated after Disney employees protested the company\u2019s stance on LGBTQ issues, as Variety<\/a><\/em>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n Lauren Gunderson, a writer who\u2019s credited for contributing \u201cadditional screenplay material\u201d for Lightyear<\/em>, responded to Snoop\u2019s comments in a Threads post<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n \u201cAs we wrote early versions of what became Lightyear<\/em>, a key character needed a partner, and it was so natural to write \u2018she\u2019 instead of \u2018he,\u2019\u201d she wrote. \u201cAs small as that detail is in the film, I knew the representational effect it could have. Small line, big deal. I was elated that they kept it. I\u2019m proud of it. To infinity. Love is love.\u201d<\/p>\n In a follow-up post, Gunderson wrote, \u201cI had very little to do with the final script. But I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen.
