Snoop Dogg<\/a> is speaking out after facing backlash for his recent remarks about LGBTQ+ representation in children\u2019s movies.<\/p>\n On Wednesday (Aug. 27), the 53-year-old rapper addressed the controversy in the comments section of a Hollywood Unlocked<\/em> Instagram post<\/a>, where media personality T.S. Madison had criticized him for his reaction to a same-sex couple depicted in the 2022 animated film Lightyear<\/em>.<\/p>\n More from Billboard<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,\u201d Snoop wrote. \u201cAll my gay friends [know] what\u2019s up they been calling me with love .\u201d<\/p>\n He added, \u201cMy bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old \u2026 teach me how to learn I\u2019m not perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n Snoop\u2019s comments came days after he appeared on the Aug. 20 episode of Dr. Sarah Fontenot\u2019s It\u2019s Giving<\/em> podcast, where he recalled taking his grandson<\/a> to see Lightyear<\/em>. During the film, he discovered that one of the female characters was in a same-sex marriage and had children with her wife.<\/p>\n \u201cWhy my grandson in the middle of the movie like, \u2018Papa Snoop, how she have a baby with a woman? She a woman,’\u201d Snoop recounted. \u201cI didn\u2019t come here for this s-t, I just came to watch the goddamn movie.\u201d<\/p>\n The \u201cDrop It Like It\u2019s Hot\u201d rapper continued, \u201cSo it\u2019s like, f\u2014k me, I\u2019m scared to go to the movies now. Like, y\u2019all throwing me in the middle of s\u2014t that I don\u2019t have an answer for,\u201d Snoop said. \u201cIt threw me for a loop. We have to show that at this age? Like, they\u2019re going to ask questions. I don\u2019t have the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n His remarks sparked swift backlash online<\/a>, with many accusing him<\/a> of being homophobic. Among those who responded was Lightyear<\/em> writer Lauren Gunderson, who addressed the controversy in a Threads post<\/a> on Aug. 27.<\/p>\n \u201cAs we wrote early versions of what became LIGHTYEAR, a key character needed a partner, and it was so natural to write \u2018she\u2019 instead of \u2018he,\u2019\u201d Gunderson wrote. \u201cAs small as that detail is in the film, I knew the representational effect it could have. Small line, big deal. I was elated that they kept it.\u201d<\/p>\n The writer continued, \u201cI had very little to do with the final script. But I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen. I know they got a lot of s\u2014t for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters because beautiful love like this exists.\u201d<\/p>\n Lightyear<\/em> features a brief scene in which Alisha, a central character, is revealed to be queer and in a committed relationship with another woman. The two share a kiss, a moment that led to the film being banned in several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
