She\u2019s mostly been reduced to a trope.<\/p>\n \u201cNo one will understand me until I\u2019m dead,\u201d Paltrow, 52, said in a teaser clip of her upcoming appearance on The Cutting Room Floor<\/em> podcast. \u201cI have never created my own narrative,\u201d she continued. \u201cI\u2019ve lived for many decades now with this avatar that\u2019s, like, projected on very very strongly, and I don\u2019t know why. You want to say, \u2018But this is not true,\u2019 or, \u2018I never said that,’\u201d per Us Weekly.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n Lately, she\u2019s been trying to stop correcting the record. \u201cIf you could get to the stage where you could really let go of trying to correct misperception, what could that do?\u201d she asked. It\u2019s a vulnerable admission from someone who has spent decades as both a Hollywood fixture and a lightning rod for criticism.<\/p>\n Part of the tension, of course, is that Paltrow\u2019s public persona has been shaped not just by fame but by Goop. Goop has thrived on its own controversy \u2014 pricey candles<\/a>, eyebrow-raising health claims, a window into the kind of privilege most people can\u2019t buy. In that sense, the \u201cavatar\u201d she describes isn\u2019t entirely imagined.<\/p>\n Still, she insists it\u2019s more complicated. In the \u201990s, she explained, stars were expected to remain mysterious. \u201cIn the olden days movie stars were supposed to be mysterious and you were given these tidbits about their lives and it was so exciting and titillating. And then that bred this whole tabloid thing that reached an apex before Instagram.\u201d<\/p>\n Today, Instagram has dismantled that system, leaving even the most introverted celebrities to post their way into relatability. \u201cBut for me, because I\u2019m introverted, it\u2019s been uncomfortable,\u201d she admitted, adding that she wasn\u2019t \u201ctrained\u201d to interact with fans that way. \u201cIt\u2019s not intuitive. It\u2019s very uncomfortable,\u201d she said, though she acknowledged the platform\u2019s value for business.<\/p>\n Paltrow was less interested in fixing misconceptions about herself than about Goop. \u201cI don\u2019t think that everything on the site is unattainable,\u201d she said, admitting the price point is \u201cout of reach\u201d for many.
