At long last,\u00a0Alabama Shakes<\/strong> have returned with their first new release in ten years, \u201cAnother Life\u201d. The standalone track arrives amid the Grammy-winning group\u2019s first tour since 2017<\/a> [get tickets<\/a>].<\/p>\n \u201cAnother Life\u201d recaptures the vintage Southern soul-meets-garage rock sound that made Alabama Shakes an overnight sensation with 2012\u2019s breakout debut Boys & Girls<\/em>. While at first the song seems like it could have been cut\u00a0from singer\/guitarist Brittany Howard<\/strong>\u2018s acclaimed pair of solo albums, 2019\u2019s breakout Jaime<\/em> and last year\u2019s\u00a0What Now<\/em>, the track\u2019s gradual build combusts into a supernova of Howard\u2019s wailing and the blaring fuzzed-out drone of Heath Fogg<\/strong>\u2018s guitar for a sound that is uniquely Alabama Shakes.\u00a0Howard\u2019s lyrics conceivably allude to the group\u2019s long-awaited return, with the chorus, \u201cCan we try again (Can we try again in another life?) \/ One more time again (Can we try in another life?)\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I wrote \u2018Another Life\u2019, I was thinking about all the lives we carry,\u201c Howard said of the song the band recorded at Nashville\u2019s Sound Emporium Studios<\/strong> with longtime collaborator Shawn Everett<\/strong>. \u201cThe ones we\u2019re living right now, the ones that slipped away because of different choices, the what ifs, the what wasn\u2019t meant to be, the goodbyes, and the chance encounters that feel divine. This song is about those threads and how they stretch across time and space, connecting every version of who we are. It\u2019s about letting them come together, letting them harmonize, and realizing that goodbye isn\u2019t really goodbye. It\u2019s more like I\u2019ll see you later. A collective story that never stops unfolding. I\u2019m glad we opened this door into this reality of us making music together again.\u201d<\/p>\n Alabama Shakes\u2019 last announced performance was in August 2017 at the\u00a0Osheaga Festival<\/strong>, with the band going on hiatus the following year. While Howard made waves as a solo singer-songwriter, the band fell silent until December 2024, when Howard, Fogg, and bassist Zac Cockrell<\/strong> staged a surprise reunion<\/a> at a holiday benefit concert in Tuscaloosa. Ben Tanner<\/strong>, who has previously toured with Alabama Shakes as a keyboardist, took on drum duties in place of\u00a0Steve Johnson<\/strong>, who pleaded guilty<\/a> to violating a domestic violence protection order in 2020.
