Jude Law<\/a> has said he doesn\u2019t \u201cfear repercussions\u201d from the Russian government after playing Vladimir Putin<\/a> in the divisive new film, The Wizard of the Kremlin, at the Venice Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The actor plays the young president in the political thriller directed by Olivier Assayas, which charts the President\u2019s rise to power after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and premieres at the film festival today.<\/p>\n

Law, 52, stars alongside Succession<\/a> star Paul Dano, who plays a crafty, fictional spin-doctor who aids Putin\u2019s efforts in climbing the ladder, from behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

The film premieres as the war in Ukraine<\/a> continues to rage on, just hours after a massive overnight attack was launched on 14 regions of Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This also comes after former speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, Andriy Parubiy was shot dead by gunmen<\/a> on the streets in Lviv.<\/p>\n

At the festival, Law said he was not worried about the political ramifications of playing the role in a film which could be seen as decidedly critical of the Russian leader.<\/p>\n

The star said: \u201cI hope not naively\u2026 but no, I didn\u2019t fear repercussions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt confident in the hands of Olivier [Assayas] and the script and that this was a story that was going to be told intelligently, and with nuance and consideration.<\/p>\n

He went on to explain that the film isn\u2019t \u201clooking for controversy for controversy\u2019s sake\u201d, explaining that his role as Putin was \u201ca character within a broader story.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cWe weren\u2019t trying to define anything about anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Law admitted that prior to playing the high-profile part, he understood \u201cvery little\u201d about Russian politics and that starring in the film was a \u201crevelation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained the difficulties of playing the role of Putin, who he described as \u201cThe Man With No Face,\u201d noting: \u201cThe public face we see gives very, very little away.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor struggled to name any positives he found in the character of Putin whilst playing the role. With a laugh, The Holiday star said: \u201cWell \u2013 I learnt Judo! I took my own positive from that!\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if he believed Russia<\/a> rules the world, the film\u2019s director, Olivier Assayas, laughed and said: \u201cThat\u2019s an easy one \u2013 the answer is no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe film is about how modern politics \u2013 21st century politics – was invented, and part of that evil raised from the rise to power of Vladimir Putin in Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Assayas, 70, expressed his fears of the rise of Russia as the war in Ukraine plows ahead. The director said, \u201cWe made the movie about what politics has become, and the very scary and dangerous situation we all feel we are in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also featuring in the film is American Fiction star Jeffrey Wright, who said that the film serves as a warning to US politics under the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Wright, 59, said: \u201cYes [the US] has had impulses towards fascism, autocracy and all manner of sins.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEven within the time frame of the original sins of America – even within that grotesqueness – we had an idea that we could be better.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf that is lost – as it is now – then we become the thing we see in this film\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
