    In a 2014 oral history<\/a> in Variety<\/em>, Supernatural <\/em>creator Eric Kripke revealed that the idea for the show came about in a bit of improv when Warner Bros. execs were turning down another idea he\u2019d pitched them. \u201cIn this moment, when they were basically passing on my idea, as you often do in these kinds of rooms, you start tap dancing,\u201d he recalled. \u201cAnd I said, … \u2018we should do this show as \u2018Route 66,\u2019 two cool guys in a classic car cruising the country, chasing down these urban legends,\u2019 and literally right on the spot I said \u2018and they\u2019re brothers<\/em>,\u2019 because it popped in my head. \u2018And they\u2019re dealing with their family stuff and they\u2019re fighting evil.\u2019 You just start making it up as you go. They were like, \u2018Brothers, wow, that\u2019s a relationship we haven\u2019t seen on TV before.\u2019 And from there, \u2018Supernatural\u2019 was born \u2026 out of a piece of improvisation.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Before The WB officially became The CW in 2006<\/a>, Supernatural <\/em>briefly shared the airwaves with a little show named Charmed<\/em>. However, the two series have more in common than just the same original network.<\/p>\n

    Back before they joined the Supernatural <\/em>family, actors Sebastian Roch\u00e9<\/a> (Balthazar), Mark Sheppard<\/a> (Crowley), and Misha Collins<\/a> (Castiel) all appeared in minor roles on Charmed<\/em>. Both Roch\u00e9 and Sheppard appeared on the series as demonic characters, while Collins guest-starred as an innocent that Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) saves from a dangerous group of demons.<\/p>\n

    Morgan, who plays Sam and Dean\u2019s father John, thought that he wouldn\u2019t be back after shooting a flashback sequence at the beginning of the series\u2014but when producers wanted him back for a few episodes at the end of the show\u2019s first season, it required a bit of juggling. \u201cI was shooting Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> simultaneously, so my career had just taken off after 500 years of doing nothing,\u201d he told Variety<\/em>. \u201cSo I remember that I was really tired and playing these two characters simultaneously … they shifted my schedule so I would shoot during the week with Grey\u2019s<\/em>, fly to Vancouver and shoot Supernatural<\/em> on the weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Way back in the season four episode \u201cSex and Violence,\u201d Sam and Dean investigate a string of deaths that end up being linked back to a siren named Belle, a nod to the princess at the center of Disney\u2019s Beauty and the Beast<\/em><\/a>. Across the various seasons, Sam and Dean have also encountered sirens named Ariel (The Little Mermaid<\/em><\/a>), Aurora (Sleeping Beauty<\/em><\/a>), and Jasmine (Aladdin<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n

Among the numerous list of tributes scattered throughout the series\u2019 seasons: Angus and Young (AC\/DC\u2019s Angus Young), Plant and Page (Led Zeppelin<\/a>\u2019s Robert Plant and Jimmy Page), and Tyler and Perry (Aerosmith\u2019s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry).<\/p>\n
