In 2001, DreamWorks<\/a> launched its biggest franchise yet with Shrek<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

After decades of Disney<\/a> fairy tales dominating animation, the world was ready for a satirical take that flipped that formula on its head. Starring Mike Myers<\/a> as a lone-wolf ogre, the film filtered familiar storybook icons through a farcical lens. That includes the requisite talking animal sidekick, Donkey (Eddie Murphy<\/a>), and the damsel in distress, Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom read fairy tales to me,\u201d Myers told Entertainment Weekly<\/em> in 2001<\/a>. \u201cShe\u2019s from Liverpool, and she\u2019s a trained actress. For me, Curious George was from London. So I went, \u2018Aha! Shrek should have the Scottish accent of somebody who\u2019s lived in Canada 20 years.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The film led to three initial sequels and two Puss in Boots<\/a> <\/em>spinoffs led by Antonio Banderas<\/a>. And though it has long been delayed, Shrek 5<\/em><\/a> is officially in the works.
