Pictures\u2019 \u201cWeapons\u201d ($12.78 million) for the holiday weekend, according to Comscore data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Warner Bros. Discovery is the parent company of celebrity.land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Labor Day weekend box office earnings totaled about $82.9 million from Friday to Monday, short of the $100 million mark achieved in 2023 ($115 million) and 2024 ($104.9 million).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s not surprising to see a dip in ticket sales leading into the first week of September. Robbins noted that the weekend success of \u201cJaws\u201d wasn\u2019t a negative for the new releases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt just speaks to the fact that \u2018Jaws\u2019 remains an incredibly popular film,\u201d said Robbins. \u201cIt\u2019s more of a compliment to \u2018Jaws\u2019 than an insult to anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sony\u2019s \u201cCaught Stealing\u201d ($9.6 million), which topped the box office on Friday, and Disney\u2019s \u201cFreakier Friday\u201d ($8.3 million), finished third and fourth, respectively, at the four-day weekend box office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Disney\u2019s Searchlight Pictures\u2019 \u201cThe Roses,\u201d a retelling of the 1989 comedy \u201cThe War of the Roses,\u201d opened this weekend to $8 million Friday through Monday.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">A bittersweet end to the summer<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The summer movie season has consistently been the biggest boon for Hollywood. Dergarabedian estimates that, on average, the summer accounts for as much as 40% of annual box office earnings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The season\u2019s total box office wrapped up with an estimated $3.7 billion, according to Comscore, which tracks summer earnings from the first Friday in May through the first Monday of September. This summer fell short of reaching $4 billion, a post-pandemic milestone that was only achieved in 2023 due in large part to the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/20\/media\/barbie-oppenheimer-barbenheimer-reliable-sources?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cBarbenheimer\u201d craze;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">\u201cBarbenheimer\u201d craze<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe would have hoped \u2026 to not kind of end the summer with a bit of a whimper rather than a bang. But for the experiences that people are having in the theater right now, I think we can say it\u2019s been a terrific summer,\u201d Dergarabedian said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There was a broad slate of genres, spanning horror, comedy, family animations and action, which continued to drive moviegoers to theaters, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Disney\u2019s \u201cLilo &amp; Stitch\u201d ($422 million), the highest earner of the summer, opened Memorial Day weekend and helped lift the May box office up 76% from the previous year, according to Comscore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Warner Bros. Pictures\u2019 \u201cSuperman\u201d ($351.7 million) and Universal Pictures\u2019 \u201cJurassic World Rebirth\u201d ($336 million) were also top performers this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Robbins noted that Warner Bros.
