And now, on the eve of his latest release <em>PRISM<\/em> \u2013 the third instalment of his <em>Four Seasons<\/em> project \u2013 he&#8217;s reinvented himself once again, both creatively and personally.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>At his peak, Butler was a fixture of <strong>triple j<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Hottest 100<\/strong>. His distinctive slide guitar, rootsy anthems, and political candour made him both a star and a lightning rod. Before COVID hit, Butler\u2019s long-standing trio \u2013 one of Australia\u2019s most celebrated live outfits \u2013 was dissolving.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy long-standing band kind of wanted to do other things \u2013 which I totally understand,\u201d he says. \u201cThat&#8217;s why I do my own music and have my own band! So we disbanded, and I put together a really good band to kind of finish my contracts. Isolated, like many artists, Butler went solo again \u2013 not just onstage but in the studio. Alone with his instruments, he began to reimagine what a John Butler record could sound like \u2013 and the <em>Four Seasons<\/em> project was born.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p><em>Running River<\/em> was the first to fruit \u2013 a gentle, ambient, meditative work brimming with texture and healing energy. Then came <em>Still Searching<\/em>, a fully instrumental release anchored in deep rhythm and introspection. Both marked stark departures from the radio-friendly stompers of his past.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>But <em>PRISM<\/em>, the latest and most sonically ambitious chapter, almost didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"John Butler - King of California (Official Lyric Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-xfE1XgXWzc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was making the album by myself \u2013 producing and engineering it in my room,\u201d Butler recalls. \u201cIt was a lot of fun. But then the computer froze. Things got messy and sloppy. All the beautiful colours of the <em>PRISM<\/em> turned brown. I freaked out and, thankfully, gave up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>It was this surrender that cleared space for collaboration. He reached out to longtime percussionist <strong>Michael Barker<\/strong>, keyboardist <strong>Ian Peres<\/strong>, and drummer <strong>Michael Boase<\/strong> \u2013 artists he\u2019d admired and worked with at different times, but never together.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put this band together especially for this album, so I\u2019ve never really been in a band in this formation before,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>Even still, the album wasn\u2019t recorded as a unit. Instead, it emerged in waves. Touring the instrumental <em>Still Searching<\/em> with just percussion, Butler began to sense chemistry. Producer <strong>James Ireland<\/strong> was later brought in to help bring <em>PRISM<\/em> across the finish line. The result: a layered, intricate sound that feels both familiar and boldly new.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>The familiar and new are not strangers in Butler\u2019s world, and they aren\u2019t confined solely to his musical sphere. His wife, <strong>Danielle Caruana<\/strong> \u2013 better known as <strong>Mama Kin<\/strong> \u2013 is a much-loved artist and musician in her own right. Their children, too, are increasingly musically inclined.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not lost on me,\u201d he says. \u201cI feel very blessed and struck by just the beauty that comes out of our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fun and surreal that we\u2019re all releasing music in the same month. It wasn\u2019t planned. It just kind of happened. Butler has always been acutely aware of the broader social and environmental crises happening around him \u2013 from climate inaction to genocide to the erosion of truth in public life.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a contrast to that family joy,\u201d he says. \u201cWatching governments not believe in science, watching injustice \u2013 it\u2019s confronting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>From his earliest days, Butler has viewed music not just as expression, but as service. Hanging out with environmental activists in his youth instilled a sense of civic duty that never left.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember thinking, what I\u2019m doing is kind of self-indulgent compared to these people,\u201d he says. \u201cThey\u2019re protecting water, freedom, and democracy. Without that, we don\u2019t have life. So if I\u2019m going to do this, I want it to be part of something bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>That conviction still shapes his artistic choices today.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of merit in contemplating your inherited privilege,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m successful. I\u2019m blessed. So when I want my album to go number one\u2026 in the scheme of things, it feels a little shallow. You can\u2019t not think about that when so many people are struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>Butler has also had to reckon with how the industry has changed. \u201cMy daughter said to me, \u2018Dad, I can\u2019t do what you did. I can\u2019t sell $200 worth of CDs after a $50 gig. That world doesn\u2019t exist anymore.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>Streaming, social media, and algorithm-driven discovery have transformed how artists survive \u2013 and thrive. For Butler, it&#8217;s a double-edged sword.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery superpower has a kryptonite, doesn\u2019t it?\u201d he muses. \u201cThere was a beautiful innocence in just knowing about one thing that was going on in your world, you know? Just camping, jamming till two in the morning, not knowing what else was happening outside of that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>But now, information is everywhere, and Butler acknowledges that it isn\u2019t always a bad thing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyranny can\u2019t hide anymore,\u201d he says. \u201cI like that there&#8217;s enough science getting around now that we know when the government is lying to us. But picking the setlist is the hardest part \u2013 which kids don\u2019t get to come to the playground tonight?\u201d he laughs.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s planning a staggered return to the stage \u2013 starting small, letting the songs live a little in people\u2019s lives before coming back for larger shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really a launch tour,\u201d he says. \u201cA chance to introduce people to this new world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>And what comes next? Even he\u2019s not sure.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in the middle of <em>PRISM<\/em> \u2013 well really, I\u2019m at the beginning of it,\u201d he says. \u201cBut the more this music gets out of me, the more will come. I\u2019m just along for the ride.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>At a time when people increasingly demand certainty, John Butler is content dwelling in the questions. His new music is searching, expansive, and healing \u2013 not because he has all the answers, but because he&#8217;s learned to listen.<\/p>\n<p><!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/div>\n<div class=\"prose prose-p:mb-4 prose-a:font-bold\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve realised I\u2019m just the \u2018butler\u2019 here,\u201d he says with a reflective smile. \u201cI wouldn&#8217;t be so bold as to tell you what art wants next from me.
