The weeks between the end of the summer movie season and the start of the big-ticket holiday and Oscar-bait movie season are a perfect time to check out distinctive and off-the-grid movies you might otherwise miss.<\/p>\n

That’s where film festivals come in.<\/p>\n

Each fall, Milwaukee has a harvest of film festivals, curated programs of movies that, while each has a different focus, provide one experience in common: discovery.<\/p>\n

Here, in order of occurrence, is a quick guide to four of this fall’s film festivals in the Milwaukee area.<\/p>\n

Milwaukee International Short Film Festival<\/h2>\n

What you will see:<\/strong> 75 short films \u2014 all but four of them local premieres (and a few world premieres), showing in five blocks of films, plus two more blocks of shorts making up the third Milwaukee Illuminate Film Festival. Among the film blocks is the festival’s 10th “Voices Heard” program, featuring works by local filmmakers of color (1 p.m. Sept. 6). The juried festival also has in-person and online filmmaker panels and an awards ceremony (following the 7 p.m. Sept. 6 block).<\/p>\n
