The first clip from Eimi Imanishi\u2019s directorial debut \u201cNomad Shadow\u201d has been released as the film prepares for its world premiere at the 50th Toronto Film Festival.<\/p>\n
The drama follows a young woman\u2019s difficult homecoming after being deported from Spain to Western Sahara, the territory she left years earlier. The protagonist faces rejection from both the cultural environment she tried to escape and the family members who remain bitter about her original departure. Her efforts to maintain her identity while navigating traditional expectations only deepen the rift with her past life.<\/p>\n
More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to premiere \u2018Nomad Shadow,\u2019 one of the first fiction films set in Western Sahara, at Toronto,\u201d said producers Shrihari Sathe, Bel\u00e9n S\u00e1nchez Silvero, Queralt Pons Serra, Damon Owlia, Jayne Baron Sherman, Virginie Lacombe and Eric Dupont. \u201cAt a time when deportations and forced removals are destroying lives worldwide, we\u2019re proud to bring this timely and deeply human story of return out into the world starting with the wonderful audiences in Toronto.\u201d<\/p>\n The Toronto premiere marks a homecoming of sorts for Imanishi, who previously brought her short film \u201cBattalion to My Beat\u201d to the festival in 2016.<\/p>\n Imanishi said: \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to be back with the festival\u2019s legendary audiences and to be able to fulfill my dream of bringing them to Western Sahara and immersing them in its world as I know it.\u201d<\/p>\n Lead actor Nadhira Mohamed, who headlines the film, draws from lived experience having been raised in Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria\u2019s Tindouf region. She has spent over a decade in social services work, currently partnering with the Spanish Red Cross to assist asylum seekers.<\/p>\n \u201cI joined \u2018Nomad Shadow\u2019 as it reflects, from a woman\u2019s perspective, the journey that many migrants face,\u201d Mohamed said. \u201cThis is why I wanted to play this role, it is the story of many people I have met, and continue to meet, every day.\u201d<\/p>\n Mohamed\u2019s previous acting credit includes a role in 2011\u2019s \u201cWilaya,\u201d helmed by Pedro P\u00e9rez Rosado and produced by Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Morales.<\/p>\n Imanishi serves as both writer-director and producer alongside Sathe, S\u00e1nchez Silvero, Pons Serra, Owlia, Baron Sherman, Lacombe and Dupont.
