Sofia Coppola\u2019s intimate portrait of fashion designer and her long-time friend Marc Jacobs premieres in Venice on Tuesday, and the pair are nothing but full of praise for one another.<\/p>\n
Coppola and Jacobs were present at the press conference for Marc by Sofia <\/em>on the Lido, fielding questions about the film from the press.<\/p>\n More from The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cWhen they asked me to do a film on Marc, I thought, \u2018No, I can\u2019t do that. It\u2019s too much pressure,’\u201d Coppola admitted. \u201c\u2018[It] would have to be good, because he\u2019s my friend and I love him.\u2019 And then I kept thinking about, oh, it\u2019d be so fun to look through all the archives\u2026 we\u2019ve been friends for 30 years, and [it would be fun] to get to revisit his incredible body of work that I grew up with.\u201d<\/p>\n The process reminded her of working on films with her brother in her 20s, she added. \u201cJust my brother and me and a camera and a sound person \u2014 it was kind of made in the spirit of the way [I] started and I wanted this homemade, personal look.\u201d<\/p>\n Jacobs, who first met Coppola in the early \u201990s, concurred: \u201cIt was very easy to say yes to Sofia. I feel very comfortable\u2026 I was excited by Sofia\u2019s attitude and approach to a documentary which wasn\u2019t conventional. It was much more organic and natural.\u201d<\/p>\n Coppola, known for her work on the Oscar-winning Lost in Translation <\/em>(2003), Marie Antoinette <\/em>(2006), and more recently, Priscilla <\/em>(2023), admitted that it was an adjustment to make a film about such a close friend in an improvisational style.<\/p>\n \u201cI wanted it to feel personal, but it was a balance because I didn\u2019t want it to be about me,\u201d she explained. \u201cI wanted to have a sense of our friendship and that it was being made by a friend, through my point of view\u2026 And I wanted to make sure that the audience felt included, that they were brought in and never felt like it was [an] inside joke that they weren\u2019t a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n Jacobs was asked about his candour when tackling tough subjects like drugs, plastic surgery and leaving New York. \u201cIt\u2019s true, I\u2019ve chosen to be very honest and open about things that other people feel shame around,\u201d he said. \u201cI just find it benefits me not to feel shame, and the only way to do that is to be frank and open and honest. I knew this wasn\u2019t going to be a Barbara Walters interview,\u201d he laughed, \u201cwhere I was gonna be stuck and choke on some detail or some controversy or something like that. I knew that wasn\u2019t what we were doing. And I wouldn\u2019t imagine, in any way, shape or form, that that would be something Sofia was interested in doing. So it wasn\u2019t a concern.\u201d<\/p>\n Does Coppola believe her resonance with a younger audience is linked to her passion for the fashion industry? \u201cThat\u2019s nice to hear\u2026 It\u2019s just something that I love and it\u2019s inspiring and exciting to me.
