Graham Greene, the Oscar-nominated actor who helped open doors for Indigenous actors in Hollywood, died on Monday in Toronto after battling a long illness, Deadline<\/a> and others report. The Canadian actor was 73.<\/p>\n Born in Ohsweken, on the Six Nations Reserve, Greene saw his Hollywood profile catapult after Kevin Costner cast him as Kicking Bird (Zi\u014btk\u00e1 Nagw\u00e1ka) in 1990\u2019s \u201cDances With Wolves,\u201d<\/a> which won the Academy Award for best picture and earned Greene an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.<\/p>\n During his screen career, which began with the 1979 Canadian drama series \u201cThe Great Detective,\u201d Greene was cast in more than 180 films and TV shows. His first movie role was in 1983\u2019s \u201cRunning Brave.\u201d<\/p>\n He went on to star in several other high-profile films including \u201cMaverick,\u201d \u201cThe Green Mile,\u201d \u201cDie Hard With a Vengeance\u201d and \u201cThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn \u2014 Part 2.\u201d The actor also appeared in \u201cTulsa King,\u201d \u201cRiverdale\u201d and as Maximus in the final season of the Emmy-nominated show \u201cReservation Dogs,\u201d which was among his final roles.<\/p>\n At the time of his death, he had eight upcoming projects, including the Stefan Ruzowitzky-directed thriller \u201cIce Fall,\u201d<\/a> which he had completed filming with Joel Kinnaman and Danny Huston. It\u2019s scheduled to be released in October.<\/p>\n \u201cHe was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed,\u201d Greene\u2019s agent Michael Greene (no relation) said in a statement released to several outlets, including Deadline and TMZ. \u201cYou are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,\u201d he added, referring to the actor\u2019s former agent, who died in 2013.<\/p>\n Outside of his acting career, Greene won a Grammy in 2000 for best spoken word album for children for his work on \u201cListen to the Storyteller.\u201d He is also a Gemini and Canadian Screen Award winner and an Independent Spirit nominee. In 2021, he was immortalized with a star on Canada\u2019s Walk of Fame, and earlier this year, he received the Governor General\u2019s Performing Arts Award in his native country.<\/p>\n In 1991, Greene told the Los Angeles Times that<\/a> \u201cDances With Wolves\u201d \u201cwas certainly the biggest film I\u2019ve done. It\u2019s made definite changes in my life \u2014 I\u2019m more popular with the media, scripts are being offered to me from people I\u2019ve never heard of. On the other hand, I\u2019m being inundated. It\u2019s good in a way.
