Colman Domingo made time in his busy schedule to briefly appear in Gus Van Sant\u2019s new hostage thriller \u201cDead Man\u2019s Wire\u201d because he was drawn to the movie\u2019s timely subject matter. The 1977-set film is based on the true story of Tony Kiritsis, a real estate developer who took his broker hostage after falling behind his mortgage payments. Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd stars as Kiritsis, a societal outcast who feels he\u2019s been screwed over by the powers that be.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is about an everyman feeling like they have no resources or any agency in the world,\u201d he said at Venice Film Festival during the official press conference. \u201cWe need to tell stories like that again and again because this is exactly what happens when people are up against the wall. We can prevent things like this by really examining these people as human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skarsg\u00e5rd missed the press conference due to scheduling conflicts. However his co-stars Domingo,\u00a0Myha\u2019la,\u00a0Cary Elwes and Cassian Elwes were in attendance to talk about the film.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019s shooting a movie in Australia right now,\u201d Cassian Elwes said. \u201cThe producers are worried about letting him go. but it\u2019s not for lack of enthusiasm.\u201d<\/p>\n In an interview with Variety<\/em><\/a> ahead of Venice, Van Sant said he is drawn to make films about outsiders, having previously directed movie such as \u201cDrugstore Cowboy,\u201d \u201cMy Own Private Idaho\u201d and \u201cGood Will Hunting.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI relate to them,\u201d Van Sant said. \u201cStories about one individual versus a whole system are just Although the gripping true story behind \u201cDead Man\u2019s Wire\u201d happened in the 1970s, Van Sant sees it as timely as ever, considering Luigi Mangione\u2019s shooting of the health-care executive last December. \u201cIt made me realize we\u2019re telling a story that\u2019s also happening today,\u201d he told Variety<\/em>.<\/p>\n At the press conference, Van Sant elaborated about the relevance of the Mangione shooting as well as the recent presidental election. \u201cThere are things happening that are dovetailing into our own project. We thought, \u2018Is that good or bad?\u2019 It was interesting,\u201d he said. \u201cWe kept going in telling our story.
