The London-born artist—son of Peter Perrett of The Only Ones—is carving out his own space with a sound that blends indie rock, post-punk grit, grunge intensity, and flashes of psychedelia. With the release of his debut EP Nepo Baby, Perrett is ready to step forward as a songwriter in his own right.

Growing up in Forest Hill, South East London, Jamie describes his childhood as both green and hostile, marked by family struggles and his parents’ battles with addiction. “Music became my escape, my therapy, my shield, and my weapon,” he explains. That survival instinct shaped his path, leading him to play in projects like Babyshambles, Love Minus Zero, and Strangefruit, as well as producing his father’s last two solo records. But now, his focus is firmly on his own work.

That vision resulted in his debut EP Nepo Baby, a project he not only wrote but also self-produced. “It was liberating,” he says. “I had a clear vision from the moment I wrote the songs on acoustic guitar. Producing it myself meant I could follow my instincts completely.”

The title Nepo Baby is deliberately provocative. In an era where the term sparks debate, Jamie leans into it. “It was about owning the label and addressing the elephant in the room. People make assumptions the moment they hear it. This EP is my way of saying: yes, that’s part of my story.”

With Nepo Baby now out, Jamie is already looking ahead. An album is finished, more songs are ready, and live shows are lined up.

Keep reading to discover more about Jamie Perrett’s journey, Nepo Baby, and what comes next.

How would you describe your music?

Melodic but gritty. Rock with a dark edge. The lyrics dive into tragedy and difficult truths.

What’s your musical journey been like?

Music was survival. I enjoyed playing in projects like Babyshambles, Love Minus Zero, Strangefruit, and working with my dad, Peter Perrett of The Only Ones — playing guitar and producing his last two solo records. But I think ultimately I’m a songwriter, I always knew I had to write and sing my own songs. Because that’s where my heart is.

Your debut EP Nepo Baby has just been released. How does it feel?

Amazing — and like just the beginning. I already have an album recorded, plus loads more songs ready to go. I can’t wait to share them.

The title Nepo Baby is striking. Why did you choose it?

It was about owning the label and addressing the elephant in the room. People make assumptions the moment they hear the term “nepo baby.” This EP is my way of saying: yes, that’s part of my story — but it’s not the whole story. My childhood was chaotic and lonely. My parents were addicted to crack and heroin, and we lived in extreme conditions. Survival meant resilience. Music gave me a way through.

You produced the EP yourself.
