live music industry has recovered from the pandemic slump \u2013 and then some.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-advert__uber\">\n<div id=\"uberad\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/bandsintown-inks-youtube-deal-to-become-platforms-exclusive-provider-of-concert-listings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Newly-released data show consumer spend on live music events jumped <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>9.5% YoY<\/strong><\/span> in 2024, to <strong>GBP \u00a36.68 billion<\/strong> (<strong>USD $7.23 billion<\/strong> at the average exchange rate for 2024).<\/p>\n<p>The data comes from industry group <strong>Live music Industry Venues and Entertainment<\/strong> (<strong>LIVE<\/strong>), a federation of 15 live music industry associations representing 3,000 businesses, 35,000 artists and 2,000 backstage workers.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, live music revenues were around <strong>\u00a32 billion<\/strong> higher in 2024 than they were in 2019, the last full year before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down most live music events across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The report noted that UK live music growth doubled that of the global recorded music industry, citing data from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/emerging-markets-superfans-and-price-rises-7-takeaways-from-goldman-sachs-new-music-in-the-air-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Goldman Sachs<\/strong>\u2019 <em>Music in the Air<\/em> report<\/a> showing that recorded music revenues rose by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>4.8%<\/strong><\/span> worldwide in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>It also quoted Goldman Sachs\u2019 assertion that \u201cthere\u2019s a robust demand and supply outlook for the live music industry\u2026 it has proven to be more recession-resilient than other forms of entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was something of a shift in what sorts of events UK music fans spent their money on in 2024, with fans increasingly choosing concerts over festivals.<\/p>\n<p>While concert revenue jumped <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>12.2% YoY<\/strong><\/span>, to <strong>\u00a35.0 billion<\/strong> (<strong>$5.4 billion<\/strong>), festival revenue increased by only <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>1.9% YoY<\/strong><\/span>, to <strong>\u00a31.7 billion<\/strong> (<strong>$1.8 billion<\/strong>) a growth rate that was below the UK\u2019s <strong>2.5%<\/strong> inflation rate for the year.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a some of which have struggled to sustain themselves through the extended period of high inflation,\u201d the LIVE report noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also attributable to higher ticket prices, which have had to rise after spikes in the costs of labor, energy and other important festival inputs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, festival revenue is now above 2019 levels, LIVE noted.<\/p>\n<p>The shift also had to do with the fact that 2024 was a big year for touring, with the likes of <strong>Taylor Swift<\/strong>, <strong>Charlie XCX<\/strong> and <strong>Dua Lipa<\/strong> drawing a record <strong>23.5 million<\/strong> music tourists to events across the UK, LIVE said.<\/p>\n<p>Mainstream pop acts accounted for <strong>32.1%<\/strong> of consumer spend at the top 2,000 concerts across the country last year, a 4.7 percentage point increase, the report said.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" largest share of live music revenue, accounting for <strong>28.9%<\/strong> of the total, followed by Manchester (<strong>8.1%<\/strong>), Glasgow (<strong>5.7%<\/strong>) and Birmingham (<strong>3.5%<\/strong>). The data showed that nearly four in five (<strong>78.8%<\/strong>) of those jobs were casual or freelance.<\/p>\n<p>However, LIVE flagged the ongoing problem faced by small and grassroots music venues, which have been <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/podcast\/the-uks-live-music-venue-crisis-is-reaching-a-boiling-point-and-it-could-spread-to-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shutting down at a rapid pace<\/a> in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile UK live music continued the post-lockdown trend of strong performance for the biggest names at the biggest venues\u2026 pressure built across our grassroots as venues closed, tours were cancelled or cut back and festivals called time,\u201d LIVE CEO <strong>Jon Collins<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPressure built across our grassroots as venues closed, tours were cancelled or cut back and festivals called time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jon Collins, LIVE<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>LIVE is calling on the UK government to implement \u201cmuch-needed\u201d music festival tax relief, and said its <strong>LIVE Trust<\/strong> program will soon be ready to roll out support to small venues.<\/p>\n<p>LIVE Trust builds on on the <strong>Music Venue Trust<\/strong> initiative, which is a voluntary program under which \u00a31 of revenue from ticket sales to arena and stadium shows with capacity over 5,000 is used to support small venues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith trustees now appointed and commitments already secured from a number of high-profile artists performing stadia and arena shows throughout 2025 and 2026, the LIVE Trust is confident it can soon begin offering financial support where it is needed,\u201d LIVE said.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMore and more people have enjoyed going to gigs over the past year.
