Sydney Sweeney<\/strong><\/a> is not harping on her now-controversial American Eagle ad campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I\u2019m not there to talk about jeans,\u201d Sweeney, 27, told Vanity Fair <\/i><\/a>in a Thursday, September 4, profile, ahead of the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Christy<\/i>. \u201cThe movie\u2019s about Christy, and that\u2019s what I\u2019ll be there to talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweeney stars as the titular Christy Martin in the forthcoming biopic about the \u201990s-era boxer.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the movie\u2019s release, Sweeney was named the face of American Eagle\u2019s denim collection. An August campaign featured the double entendre tagline, \u201cSydney Sweeney Has Great Genes,\u201d that many fans believed promoted eugenics. (Eugenics is a widely discredited theory about the improvement of human genetics.)<\/p>\n

American Eagle Outfitters announced their partnership with Sweeney, 27, on Wednesday, July 23, noting that the brand will be honoring its denim heritage with the launch of its fall 2025 campaign, headlined by the Euphoria star. The campaign, \u201cSydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,\u201d is a return to essential denim dressing [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSydney thinks this whole thing has been blown out of proportion,\u201d a source exclusively told Us Weekly <\/i><\/a>at the time. <\/i>\u201cShe\u2019s focusing her energy on work.\u201d<\/p>\n

The brand has also defended the campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans\u2019 is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,\u201d a statement from the retailer read. \u201cWe\u2019ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weeks later, Sweeney told WSJ. Magazine<\/i><\/a> that she thinks \u201cvery\u201d strategically about her endorsements.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying,\u201d Sweeney explained in the interview published last month. \u201cEverything is a conversation with the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without discussing the AE backlash further, Sweeney remains focused on sharing Martin\u2019s story.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was blown away that her story wasn\u2019t more known on a universal, global level because it\u2019s just one of the most harrowing and inspiring women that I\u2019ve ever met in my entire life,\u201d she told Vanity Fair, <\/i>revealing she gained 30 pounds<\/a> for the role. <\/i>\u201cI felt very strong and powerful. I loved it. Being able to lose myself to become a vessel for somebody else is my dream.\u201d<\/p>\n
