And half (very) wrong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uncle Sam<\/strong>\u00a0still leads the world\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0terms\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0subscription revenues (at over\u00a0<strong>USD $6 billion<\/strong>\u00a0annually).<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0terms\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<em>volume<\/em>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0paying subscribers, nowhere can touch\u00a0<strong><span class=\"il\">China<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\"><span class=\"il\">China<\/span>\u2019s top two music streaming providers,\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Tencent Music Entertainment [272 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/tencent-music-entertainment\/\">Tencent Music Entertainment<\/a> (TME)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; NetEase Cloud Music [106 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/netease-cloud-music\/\">NetEase Cloud Music<\/a> (NCM)<\/strong>, counted around\u00a0<strong>171 million<\/strong>\u00a0paying users between them at the close\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a02024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">That\u2019s nearly\u00a0<strong>double the volume<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0subscription streaming accounts\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0the US at the same juncture:\u00a0<strong>100 million\u00a0<\/strong>(source:\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.riaa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RIAA-2024Year-End-Revenue-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RIAA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">What\u2019s more,\u00a0<strong><span class=\"il\">China<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is growing\u00a0<em>way<\/em>\u00a0faster than the USA.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"il\">China<\/span>\u00a0added over\u00a0<strong>25 million<\/strong>\u00a0paying music subs\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a02024, according to senior industry sources.<\/p>\n<p>The USA? Just\u00a0<strong>3.2 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/09\/e90e91f4-8970-7c3c-2814-83a666c9bd5e.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong><span class=\"il\">China<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is also rapidly gaining global market share\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0subscription streaming\u00a0<em>revenues<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bpi.co.uk\/news-analysis\/uk-music-trade-mission-to-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IFPI data<\/a>,\u00a0<span class=\"il\">China<\/span>\u2019s annual subscription trade revenues surpassed<strong>\u00a0USD $1 billion\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a02024, up\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>18.9% YoY<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"il\">In<\/span>\u00a0doing so,\u00a0<strong><span class=\"il\">China<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0surpassed\u00a0<strong>Germany<\/strong> to become the world\u2019s third-largest subscription market.<\/p>\n<p>It now looks inevitable that\u00a0<span class=\"il\">China<\/span>\u00a0will leapfrog the world\u2019s\u00a0<strong>second-largest\u00a0<\/strong>subscription market,\u00a0<strong>the UK<\/strong>, by 2026.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h6><strong>So what\u2019s \u2018The\u00a0<span class=\"il\">China<\/span>\u00a0Paradox\u2019?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">The meteoric rise\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span><strong>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">China<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0as a subscription market is obviously a boon\u00a0<span class=\"il\">for<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>world\u2019s biggest music rightsholders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">Yet, at the same time, it\u2019s a\u00a0<strong>significant threat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">That\u2019s because\u00a0<strong>Tencent Music\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>NetEase Cloud Music<\/strong>\u00a0are increasingly\u00a0<em>competing\u00a0<\/em><span class=\"il\">with<\/span>\u00a0music rightsholders<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0<strong>sign and produce<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">China<\/span>\u2019s biggest hits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\"><strong>Get your head around these numbers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">According to financial filings reviewed by\u00a0<em>MBW<\/em>, some<strong>\u00a01.4 million artists<\/strong>\u00a0are now signed directly to the \u2018independent\u2019 distribution\/label services arm\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0either\u00a0<strong>Tencent Music<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>NetEase Cloud Music<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">These indie artists don\u2019t just\u00a0<em>release\u00a0<\/em>music via\u00a0<strong>TME\/<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; NetEase [85 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/netease\/\">NetEase<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The hottest acts also receive a host\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0<strong>career-accelerating benefits<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 including\u00a0<strong>music-making assistance<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>serious marketing support<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/09\/2622c317-7a3d-8987-80ee-cf8f6f6277d7.png\"><img class=\"lazyload\" bad-src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/09\/2622c317-7a3d-8987-80ee-cf8f6f6277d7-80x40.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/09\/2622c317-7a3d-8987-80ee-cf8f6f6277d7-80x40.png 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/09\/2622c317-7a3d-8987-80ee-cf8f6f6277d7-160x80.png 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/09\/2622c317-7a3d-8987-80ee-cf8f6f6277d7-320x160.png 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/09\/2622c317-7a3d-8987-80ee-cf8f6f6277d7-418x209.png 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/09\/2622c317-7a3d-8987-80ee-cf8f6f6277d7-648x324.png 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/09\/2622c317-7a3d-8987-80ee-cf8f6f6277d7-836x418.png 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/09\/2622c317-7a3d-8987-80ee-cf8f6f6277d7-1296x648.png 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\"><span class=\"il\">In<\/span>\u00a0<strong>Tencent Music\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0latest\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.tencentmusic.com\/2025-08-12-Tencent-Music-Entertainment-Group-Announces-Second-Quarter-2025-Unaudited-Financial-Results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quarterly filing<\/a>\u00a0(Q2 2025), the platform highlights its \u201ccross-platform promotions\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"il\">for<\/span>\u00a0several key tracks signed to DIY artist services arm,\u00a0<strong>Tencent Musician<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">One\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0these tracks \u2013\u00a0<strong>Xiang Sisi\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong><em>Why Not Wait\u00a0<span class=\"il\">for<\/span>\u00a0the Wind\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 amassed over\u00a0<strong>20 million<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>streams\u00a0<\/strong>and \u201ctopped multiple music charts\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0Q2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\"><span class=\"il\">In<\/span>\u00a0addition, TME facilitated over\u00a0<strong>300 live performance opportunities<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0the quarter\u00a0<span class=\"il\">for<\/span>\u00a0nearly 100\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0its directly-signed artists.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,<strong>\u00a0NetEase Cloud Music<\/strong>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/netease-cloud-music-sees-15-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has signed<\/a>\u00a0a whopping<strong>\u00a0819,000<\/strong>\u00a0indie artists to date, who\u2019ve released<strong>\u00a04.8 million tracks\u00a0<\/strong>between them.<\/p>\n<p>A number\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0these\u00a0<strong>NetEase-signed acts<\/strong>\u00a0have received label-like services including\u00a0<strong>financing<\/strong>\u00a0(via \u2018Cloud Ladder\u2019), plus invitations to sync music\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span><strong>\u00a0ad campaigns<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">for<\/span>\u00a0major brands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NetEase<\/strong>-signed artists also receive\u00a0<strong>A&amp;R resources<\/strong>, whether digitally (\u2018AI Musician\u2019 and \u2018Trainee Musician\u2019) or via offline songwriting camps.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2021 says NetEase, its nine songwriting camps have produced<em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong>120 tracks<\/strong>\u00a0that have \u201ccollectively garnered more than\u00a0<strong>6 billion<\/strong>\u00a0plays\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Concurrently,\u00a0<strong>NetEase<\/strong>\u00a0is making its own music via\u00a0<strong>\u201c<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>-house studios\u201d<\/strong>. These studios have apparently \u201cproduced and popularized\u00a0<strong>multiple hit songs<\/strong>\u00a0across our community and\u00a0<strong>external platforms<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NetEase\u00a0<\/strong>doesn\u2019t make clear\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0earnings reports whether these \u201chit songs\u201d are performed by\u00a0<strong>human artists\u00a0<\/strong>(or not). However, it recently confirmed its biggest \u201c<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>-house\u201d hit\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0calendar Q2:\u00a0<em><strong>Liang Nan<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>(\u4e24\u96be)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Through the wonder\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Google [1,022 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/google\/\">Google<\/a> Translate<\/strong>, I\u2019ve tracked it down\u2026 and it\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Bieber-esque<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u5169\u96e3 - \u52a0\u6728\u300eLiang nan  - Jia mu\u300f\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0Fs8BGZPcxQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<hr\/>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">The growing scale\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0<strong>Tencent and NetEase\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0self-signed hits is obviously not ideal\u00a0<span class=\"il\">for<\/span>\u00a0\u2018western\u2019 companies looking to\u00a0<strong>secure global market share<\/strong>. Especially as\u00a0<span class=\"il\">China<\/span>\u00a0continues its ascent towards becoming the world\u2019s\u00a0<strong>second-biggest subscription music market<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"il\">In<\/span>\u00a0calendar Q1,\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Warner Music Group [3,313 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/access-industries\/warner-music-group\/\">Warner Music Group<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>announced\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/warner-music-group-generated-1-48bn-in-calendar-q1-2025-subscription-streaming-revenues-rose-3-2-yoy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">underwhelming growth<\/a>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0global streaming revenues (<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>+3.2% YoY<\/strong><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">Oddly, this happened despite major US-driven frontline successes at<strong>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Atlantic Records [731 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/access-industries\/warner-music-group\/atlantic-records\/\">Atlantic<\/a> Music Group<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Warner Records [483 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/access-industries\/warner-music-group\/warner-records\/\">Warner Records<\/a><\/strong>. WMG CEO\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"People &gt; Robert Kyncl [230 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/robert-kyncl\/\">Robert Kyncl<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>even<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>confirmed the quarter was defined by\u00a0<strong>\u201cour strongest [US] chart presence\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0two years\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What dragged down\u00a0<strong>Warner\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>global numbers?<strong>\u00a0The\u00a0<span class=\"il\">China<\/span>\u00a0Paradox<\/strong>\u00a0was an important factor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">As WMG<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wmg.com\/news\/warner-music-group-corp-reports-results-for-fiscal-second-quarterended-march-31-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0told investors<\/a>:<strong>\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>Streaming revenue was [affected] by a lighter release slate and\u00a0<strong>market share loss\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">China<\/span><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">Sources suggest this\u00a0<strong>market share loss<\/strong>\u00a0was partly due to WMG\u2019s general underperformance\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0<strong><span class=\"il\">China<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 significantly exacerbated by the popularity\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span><strong>\u00a0TME and NetEase\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>own artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">Warner<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is now banking\u00a0<span class=\"il\">on<\/span>\u00a0an executive\u00a0<span class=\"il\">with<\/span>\u00a0strong local knowledge and connections to<strong>\u00a0remedy its decline<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">China<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The appointment\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0WMG\u2019s new Hong Kong-based APAC chief,\u00a0<strong>Lo Ting-Fai<\/strong>, was confirmed alongside the firm\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/warner-music-group-regains-momentum-underlying-recorded-music-revenues-up-8-3-yoy-in-calendar-q2-subscription-revenues-up-8-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">much-stronger calendar Q2<\/a>\u00a0results\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0August.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Kyncl\u00a0<\/strong>said that Ting-Fai will be \u201ccommitted to finding and developing artists\u00a0<span class=\"il\">with<\/span>\u00a0massive creative and commercial impact\u201d while \u201c<strong>growing our market share<\/strong>\u00a0across the [APAC] region\u201d.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong>Warner\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>wobble\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0the face\u00a0<span class=\"il\">of<\/span>\u00a0<strong>\u2018The\u00a0<span class=\"il\">China<\/span>\u00a0Paradox\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0is not unique.<strong><br \/><\/strong><br \/>Higher-ups at other significant music firms have quietly noted similar concerns\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0private conversations \u2013 while also voicing worries over\u00a0<strong>AI-assisted music<\/strong>\u00a0being encouraged by<strong>\u00a0TME<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>NetEase\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"il\">on<\/span>\u00a0their platforms.<\/p>\n<p>It hasn\u2019t gone unnoticed,\u00a0<span class=\"il\">for<\/span>\u00a0example, that\u00a0<strong>Tencent Music<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 partly via\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tencent-music-has-integrated-deepseek-into-its-streaming-service-and-3-other-things-we-learned-on-the-companys-latest-earnings-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an integration<\/a>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">with<\/span>\u00a0<strong>copyright-ignoring<\/strong>\u00a0AI platform<strong>\u00a0DeepSeek<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 now enables its users to make AI tracks and<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tencent-music-lets-musicians-generate-ai-tracks-and-send-them-directly-to-streaming-app-qq-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0upload them directly<\/a>\u00a0to flagship music service,\u00a0<strong>QQ Music<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h6>The strategic response<\/h6>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">So how do large music rightsholders navigate this new reality\u00a0<span class=\"il\">in<\/span>\u00a0<strong><span class=\"il\">China<\/span><\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5692522454736449540mcePastedContent\">One
