We’ve Been Saying Denzel Washington’s Name Wrong This Whole Time.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Fans of the Gothic literature classic skewered the upcoming movie, helmed by \u201cPromising Young Woman\u201d director <\/span>Emerald Fennell<\/span><\/a> and starring\u00a0<\/span>Margot Robbie<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Jacob Elordi<\/span><\/a>, for everything from its casting to the fact that pop star <\/span>Charli xcx provides original music<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n Fennell\u2019s film is an adaptation of Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019s 1847 novel, which centers on the romance between Heathcliff (played by Elordi) and his teenage foster sister, Catherine Earnshaw (Robbie), that eventually descends into cruelty and bitterness.<\/span><\/p>\n Fans of the book found glaring inconsistencies between the source material and the trailer, and particularly took issue with the casting. Robbie, who plays Catherine, is far older than the book\u2019s protagonist. Some fans <\/span>also took issue with Elordi\u2019s casting as Heathcliff<\/span><\/a>. Although Heathcliff\u2019s race is never explicitly stated in the novel, he is described as \u201cdark-skinned,\u201d and scholars have debated his ethnicity<\/a><\/span>. The character was portrayed as Black in a 2011 film adaptation.<\/span><\/p>\n Fans also fear that the book\u2019s themes \u2014 like violence and cruelty, social class, race and ethnicity \u2014 will be \u201cwhitewashed\u201d in favor of tantalizing shots of its two sexy leads.
