The Seattle band\u2019s major label debut was their first and only album to go platinum, powered by the radio hits \u201cSoul Meets Body\u201d and \u201cI Will Follow You into the Dark\u201d as well as the prominent use of their music in the primetime hit <em>The O.C.<\/em> Frontman Ben Gibbard was on a prolific streak after releasing both Death Cab\u2019s fourth album <em>Transatlanticism<\/em> and his electronic side project the Postal Service\u2019s <em>Give Up<\/em> in 2003, but he revisited an earlier composition for the closing track on <em>Plans<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More from Spin:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cStable Song\u201d as it appears on <em>Plans <\/em>is a slow building waltz that runs three and a half minutes, but its lyrics and melody were already familiar to longtime Death Cab fans as \u201cStability\u201d from 2002\u2019s <em>The Stability<\/em> EP. With an extended instrumental coda, though, \u201cStability\u201d is over 12 minutes, making it the longest track in the Death Cab For Cutie catalog. \u201cStability\u201d was among the last songs Death Cab recorded with drummer Michael Schorr before he left the band. It also features keyboards by John Vanderslice and the Prom frontman James Mendenhall, who died in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A 2021 deluxe edition of 2001\u2019s <em>The Photo Album<\/em> included a demo of \u201cStable Song.\u201d It\u2019s closer to the length and structure of the <em>Plans<\/em> version, revealing that the band simply chose to release \u201cStability\u201d first, while the shorter version waited in the wings for a few more years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a 2015 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2015\/03\/ben-gibbards-favorite-death-cab-for-cutie-songs.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Vulture;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Vulture<\/em><\/a> piece, Gibbard singled out \u201cStable Song\u201d as one of his favorite Death Cab For Cutie songs, calling it a \u201ccompanion piece\u201d for the <em>Photo Album<\/em> single \u201cA Movie Script Ending.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s a song about transition, leaving something familiar and departing into the unknown. Consider <em>The Photo Album<\/em>\u2019s \u201cStyrofoam Plates\u201d a thematic return to the subject of disposable tableware.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><strong>\u201cLightness\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The rotating soundport of a Leslie speaker is often used in studios to give instruments a swirling or oscillating texture. Chris Walla took the creative step of using the sound of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Music\/comments\/34irah\/comment\/cqv60l0\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201ca mic\u2019d up squeaky Leslie speaker\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">\u201ca mic\u2019d up squeaky Leslie speaker\u201d<\/a> to give the <em>Transatlanticism<\/em> track \u201cLightness\u201d an eerie ambiance.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><strong>\u201cI\u2019ll Never Give Up On You\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The members of Death Cab sent files back and forth during the early days of the COVD-19 pandemic to make the 2022 album <em>Asphalt Meadows<\/em>, echoing Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello\u2019s creative process for Postal Service songs.
