In some ways, Brooklyn is a bit like Disneyland.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know the \u2018It\u2019s a Small World\u2019 ride, where you go through all the different countries? That\u2019s New York,\u201d says Nicole Beharie<\/a>, who returned to her Bed-Stuy and Clinton Hill stomping grounds while shooting \u201cLove, Brooklyn<\/a>\u201d (now in theaters nationwide). \u201cYou can have a Michelin-star new chef restaurant next to a jerk chicken place and a Korean barbecue, and then there’s the Orthodox community walking through the whole thing. I\u2019m obsessed with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLove, Brooklyn\u201d is a romantic dramedy and celebration of community, following a journalist named Roger (Andr\u00e9 Holland<\/a>) who\u2019s tasked with writing about his rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. Meanwhile, he\u2019s caught in a love triangle of sorts with ex-girlfriend Casey (Beharie), an art gallery owner with whom he\u2019s remained best friends, and his new lover Nicole (DeWanda Wise), a widow whose young daughter has grown attached to Roger.<\/p>\n

The film achingly captures what it means to be in your late 30s in the city, when the romanticized notion of the struggling artist is no longer cute and you\u2019re faced with real, adult decisions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s handled in a way that doesn\u2019t feel too dark or heavy. It feels kind of like what life is,\u201d Beharie says. The will-they-won\u2019t-they dynamic between Roger and Casey is also \u201ca very familiar, messy kind of thing. I know a few relationships like that, where you\u2019re like, \u2018Are they a thing? Are they best friends? Like, what is happening with them?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Reading Paul Zimmerman\u2019s script, \u201cI saw a Black, free-spirited, sharp, and whimsical character unlike any I had seen in a modern film before,\u201d director Rachael Abigail Holder says. \u201cNicole, a brilliant actor who hasn\u2019t had many opportunities to be funny and light on her feet, was a perfect match.\u201d As an actress, \u201cshe finds the humanity in silence, the spaces between the words, and that subtle, quiet power was vital for the role.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beharie, 40, was born in West Palm Beach, Florida. Her dad was in the United States Foreign Service, and as a young girl, she lived in myriad places including Nigeria, Jamaica, the U.K., and Panama. After graduating from an arts high school in South Carolina, she moved to New York to attend the Juilliard School of Drama. It was during that time that she was introduced to Holland, then a New York University acting student. Together, they would practice monologues and share their dreams for the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one of the reasons why I wanted to do this film,\u201d Beharie says. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing more fun than working with your friends,\u201d especially those who have \u201cseen you from the beginning.\u201d <\/p>\n

After making her film debut in 2008\u2019s \u201cAmerican Violet,\u201d and leading Fox\u2019s \u201cSleepy Hollow\u201d for three seasons, Beharie gradually garnered attention with a series of critically acclaimed featured turns in Netflix\u2019s \u201cBlack Mirror,\u201d HBO\u2019s \u201cScenes from a Marriage\u201d and Apple TV+\u2019s \u201cThe Morning Show.\u201d She earned her first Emmy nomination last year for the latter, playing former Olympian-turned-news anchor Christine Hunter opposite Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.<\/p>\n

The drama\u2019s fourth season premieres Sept. 17, and finds Christine struggling to balance her family and career after navigating workplace racism last season. To better understand Christine\u2019s journey, she turned to Oscar winner Witherspoon, who was \u201cvery generous\u201d in sharing her experiences with \u201cmom guilt\u201d as a mother of three working in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was like, \u2018It never goes away,\u2019\u201d Beharie recalls. \u201cWhen you\u2019re working, you\u2019re never not aware of where you could be or what you might be missing out on. But then, they still get it all done miraculously.\u201d After her parents divorced, Beharie was raised by a single mom for much of her childhood \u201cand I saw her navigating that kind of guilt as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress could also relate to Christine\u2019s ambition, given her steady work in film and TV for nearly two decades. \u201cThe carrot\u2019s there; it\u2019s dangling,\u201d Beharie says. \u201cYou want to go after it and be successful and please people.\u201d But it\u2019s been a \u201cconstant\u201d process of managing expectations and finding what fulfills her most.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven just last year, I was looking around and I was like, \u2018I\u2019ve got a lot of things cooking, which is a blessing. But I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ve been taking my vitamins or just taking time to see my friends,\u2019\u201d Beharie says. While she loves her costars, \u201cthere\u2019s nothing like the people who have nothing to do with your work. They just want to know, \u2018How\u2019s your mom? Did you do that thing? Let me see that armoire you said you were going to build.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Although she winces at the word \u201cscene-stealer,\u201d Beharie is grateful that her nuanced supporting performances have resonated with viewers. \u201cI really love acting, so even if there isn\u2019t much to do, I\u2019m going to treat it like it\u2019s the full meal,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m going to turn this thing over and analyze the heck out of it. And somehow, other human beings feel the layers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicole Beharie believes that “no matter how small the task, you do it 100%.”<\/p>\n

Beharie won best actress at the Gotham Awards for 2020\u2019s \u201cMiss Juneteenth,\u201d and she says she is ready to take on another \u201cgreat, big role\u201d with \u201cmore dialogue.\u201d Having played many Southern women and wives over the years, she is eager to do a project where she can pull from her diverse background and multicultural experiences.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a number of different influences that I don\u2019t get to use because that\u2019s not what people have seen,\u201d Beharie says. \u201cIn that way, I have other stories to tell. I don\u2019t necessarily feel boxed in, but I feel like it\u2019s my responsibility to make people aware of the other colors that are there to play with.\u201d The challenge, she adds, is \u201cto remain optimistic and to create.\u201d<\/p>\n
