In August, one month shy of her third album release date, King Princess is relaxed and back in her hometown neighborhood after spending a month upstate, just north of Albany, N.Y. \u201c\u200aI truly touched a guitar two times,\u201d says the musician, born Mikaela Straus, seated on a bar stool inside Greenpoint haunt Ray\u2019s Hometown Bar. \u201cI get this weird feeling when I\u2019m putting out a record that I have to write a whole new record while I\u2019m putting out the record, which is a horrible vibe. And I\u2019m like \u2014 no. So I stopped myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe 26-year-old has been releasing new music in anticipation of \u201cGirl Violence,\u201d her follow up to 2022 album \u201cHold On Baby\u201d and her first since leaving the big studio complex of Columbia Records for boutique indie label Section1. Her fans have already gotten a preview of her next chapter with the release of several singles and videos from the upcoming album, including \u201cRIP KP\u201d at the start of summer, which features many of Straus\u2019 friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c\u200aI love this record. I love the art that I\u2019m making around it; I\u2019m having a lot of fun. My friends are involved, and that\u2019s always the best,\u201d Straus says. Later that night, she\u2019ll return to Ray\u2019s to meet friends for biweekly queer pool night, and is quick to extend an invite. With Straus, who also cohosts the recurring queer costume party Bazongas, the conversation often returns to the topic of relationships and cultivating community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c\u200aThe reaction\u2019s been great,\u201d she adds, asked about reception to her newest releases. \u201cI really am just so lucky to have the fans that I do. Their sense of humor and their passion for troubled lesbian music is really inspiring,\u201d she adds. \u201cMy fans are funny and they get me, and they crack me up. So it\u2019s been really wonderful to watch them play around with all of the material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat material includes an Instagram meme account launched for King Princess\u2019 archnemesis, Cherry, a spiteful bosomed cartoon fruit and recurring visual theme throughout the album launch.\u00a0\u201cShe\u2019s an ancient demon,\u201d Straus says when asked about the character\u2019s origin story. \u201cShe possesses women. She\u2019s furious at me, and I\u2019m furious at her. Now she\u2019s trying to leak my music. It\u2019s making me really upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:682px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((1024\/682)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  a-font-secondary-regular-m lrv-u-margin-t-050\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"\">King Princess<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-secondary-regular-s lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-font-size-11 lrv-u-color-grey lrv-u-margin-l-025\">Lexie Moreland\/WWD<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhether or not Cherry beats Straus to the punch, the music will be released one way or another come Sept. 12.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tStraus began working on what would become \u201cGirl Violence\u201d two years ago while still living in Los Angeles, before she moved back to Brooklyn as she settled into her mid-20s. The first song that made it onto the album was \u201cCry, Cry, Cry,\u201d an upbeat revenge track of sorts that details the breakdown of a friendship. \u201cThat was actually one of the last ones to get done,\u201d she says of the album\u2019s fifth track, released as a single in July. After starting the song, she met her lead collaborators on the album, Jake Portrait and Joseph Pincus, who helped her shape its sonic direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe album\u2019s titular track \u201cGirl Violence\u201d primes the listener with its first line, \u201cYou\u2019ve got issues, you admit it, you ask if I look at you different.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c\u200aI was investigating the topic of girl violence,\u201d Straus says of her thesis for the album, which interrogates the quiet, sneaky, sometimes below-the-surface ways that women can hurt each other. \u201cThe last line of the record is \u2018not everybody loves like this,\u2019\u201d she adds, referencing the final ballad track, \u201cSerena.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s kind of this declaration of, like, actually \u2014 all this pain, all this chaos, I\u2019m lucky to have the bandwidth to experience [it]. And that\u2019s kind of the conclusion of the record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tStraus\u2019 recent foray into acting has brought new fans into the King Princess fold, leading a resurgence of interest in past work like her debut album \u201cCheap Queen.\u201d King Princess made her acting debut this past spring in Hulu series \u201cNine Perfect Strangers,\u201d and will make her film debut with \u201cSong Sung Blue,\u201d out Christmas day. The film costars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as a Neil Diamond musical tribute act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u200a\u201dI have to tell you: it\u2019s fab,\u201d Straus says of the film, positioned as a major end-of-year release. \u201cAnd I\u2019m a pretty tough critic of movies. I fully cried.\u201d Hers is a supporting but impactful role, with Straus navigating the weight of portraying the daughter of a recovering alcoholic and aspiring performer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter her first two onscreen roles, King Princess is fully hooked on the acting life \u2014 and has a vision for what her next roles might look like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI would like to be a colonial woman or something. I wanna wear a corset. I would like to play a straight woman. That\u2019s my dream,\u201d she says. \u201cI would like to play like a gargoyle. Like, I would love to be in full prosthetics. And I think the acting thing really has allowed me to be more of a clown and less of a serious b\u2014h,\u201d she says. It also takes a little pressure off: \u201c\u200aThat\u2019s the nice thing about acting: you show up, you do your thing and then you leave and it\u2019s none of your business. You have no control over whether something\u2019s gonna be good or not. It\u2019s kind of amazing. For somebody who\u2019s a control freak, it\u2019s like exposure therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn October, Straus will kick off a tour that will take her across the U.S. and to Europe. \u201c\u200aI\u2019m beyond excited. Mommy needs to get on stage. Mommy needs a stage to live,\u201d she says. \u201c\u200aIt feels so good though to throw your body around and really thrive, and I can see that I\u2019m just ready for tour,\u201d she continues. \u201cI miss it. I miss my fans, I miss my shows. These people make me laugh. They\u2019re hilarious. They\u2019re so much fun to perform for. Like, I\u2019m just ready. \u200aI can picture in my head what the first three rows of my show look like, and I made this record thinking about them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAsked what she hopes those first rows of fans will take away from her new <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/fashion-scoops\/oasis-noel-gallagher-partners-finlay-cancer-patients-1238069026\/\" id=\"related_article_link_music\" data-tag=\"music\">music<\/a>, Straus brings her answer home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c\u200aI hope people see themselves in some of the themes that are talked about,\u201d she says. \u201cI hope that if you\u2019re a dyke, or a straight person, who\u2019s finding yourself in the chaotic mess that is dating women, that this record feels like a home for you to feel connected to the fact you\u2019re not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c\u200aI\u2019m so inspired by my community and our tales and our sagas and our chaos. I am both a part of it and an active member, but also an observer,\u201d Straus adds. \u201cIt is the hardest thing to do, to figure out how to be alive and how to be loved. That is so challenging, and I am still a student. But with my records, I\u2019m always trying to elevate the call, each time investigating something further.
