Activision\u2019s Call of Duty adaptation turned down a pitch from award-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg<\/a> to direct, according to a new report.<\/p>\n

The Jurassic Park<\/a> director was said to be interested in adapting the best-selling military video game franchise for the big screen, until the game\u2019s publisher declined the offer.<\/p>\n

As reported by Puck<\/a>, Spielberg and his production company, Amblin, pitched an idea to Activision on the condition that the Saving Private Ryan director would have complete control over the project.<\/p>\n

Due to Spielberg\u2019s insistence on control, however, the company was \u201cspooked\u201d by the offer. \u201cWith Spielberg comes the famous Spielberg Deal, which includes top-of-market economics, final cut, and full control over production and marketing,\u201d the outlet claimed.<\/p>\n

Had the deal been successful, the project would have been produced by Universal Studios. Instead, the film is being produced by Paramount.<\/p>\n

The Independent has contacted a representative of Spielberg for comment.<\/p>\n

The Call of Duty franchise is one of the most popular media franchises of all time. The games, which are mostly set within real-world military scenarios such as World War II, have sold over 500 million copies since the franchise\u2019s inception in 2003.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the new adaptation was announced, with producers alluding to a potential expansion into a TV series if the film proves popular.<\/p>\n

Call of Duty follows a run of successful video game adaptations at the box office, including this year\u2019s A Minecraft Movie, whose total of $957.7m makes it the third highest-grossing film of the year.<\/p>\n

Though Spielberg has yet to adapt a video game into a film, he is said to be a long-time fan of the franchise.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe loves Call of Duty; he enjoys the campaign,\u201d said the director\u2019s son, Max, in an interview with MinnMaxx<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Paramount CEO David Ellison spoke about his excitement over the company\u2019s acquisition of the new adaptation. \u201cAs a lifelong fan of Call of Duty this is truly a dream come true,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve,” he added, following the announcement of the film.<\/p>\n

Production of the film has yet to begin, with both the cast and director still unconfirmed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
