Katharine, the Duchess of Kent,<\/strong> has died<\/a>. She was 92.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It is with deep sorrow that Buckingham Palace announces the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent,\u201d a palace statement shared with Us Weekly<\/i> on Friday, September 5, reads. \u201cHer Royal Highness passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family.\u201d<\/p>\n

King Charles III<\/strong> and his wife, Queen Camilla<\/strong>, also offered their condolences.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe King and Queen and all Members of The Royal Family join The Duke of Kent, his children and grandchildren in mourning their loss,\u201d the statement added. \u201c[They are] remembering fondly The Duchess\u2019s life-long devotion to all the organizations with which she was associated, her passion for music and her empathy for young people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tA special relationship. Princess Kate formed a bond with Queen Elizabeth II when she became a member of the royal family, looking to the monarch for inspiration over the years. Kate became the Duchess of Cambridge when she married\u00a0Prince William in April 2011, but her introduction to the queen came three years prior at William\u2019s [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Katharine, who has not been a working royal since 2002, is survived by<\/a> husband Prince Edward<\/strong>, their three children and 10 grandchildren.<\/p>\n

Prince William\u00a0<\/strong>and his wife,\u00a0Princess Kate Middleton<\/strong>, also released a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur thoughts today are with The Duke of Kent and his family,\u201d the Prince and Princess of Wales, both 43, wrote in a statement shared via social media. \u201cThe Duchess worked tirelessly to help others and supported many causes, including through her love of music. She will be a much missed member of the family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Katharine and Edward, now 89, met when the duke was stationed at a military base in Yorkshire, England. They wed in 1961<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While Katharine had long kept a private life, she made history in 1994 when she was the first member of the royal family to convert to Catholicism. (Most members of the royal family belong to the Church of England.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI do love guidelines and the Catholic Church offers you guidelines,\u201d she told the BBC at the time. \u201cI have always wanted that in my life. I like to know what\u2019s expected of me. I like being told: You shall go to church on Sunday, and if you don\u2019t, you\u2019re in for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The royal, born Marie-Christine von Reibnitz, has been married to Queen Elizabeth\u2019s first cousin, Prince Michael of Kent, since 1978. They have two children: Lord Frederick Windsor, 45, and Lady Gabriella Windsor, 43. In recent years, Princess Michael has faced several controversies, including [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Katharine worked as a music teacher after resigning from her royal duties in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just known as Mrs. Kent,\u201d she recalled to The Telegraph<\/i><\/span><\/a> <\/i>in 2022. \u201cOnly the head [at the school] knew who I was. The parents didn\u2019t know, and the pupils didn\u2019t know. No one ever noticed. There was no publicity about it at all; it just seemed to work.\u201d<\/p>\n
