Sheinelle Jones is resuming her \u201cToday\u201d show cohosting duties after stepping away from the program<\/a> in December 2024.<\/p>\n Jones, 47, took an extended hiatus as her husband, Uche Ojeh, battled an aggressive glioblastoma, which is a form of brain cancer. Uche died at age 45 in May. During her first day back on \u201cToday\u201d on Friday, Sept. 5, Jones sat down with her coanchor Savannah Guthrie for a candid conversation<\/a> about grief. <\/p>\n \u201cIn this moment, I\u2019m OK. Day to day, I\u2019m OK. From a macro picture, how am I doing? My heart is shattered. My heart is shattered in a million pieces,\u201d Jones said. \u201cThe life that I\u2019ve known since I was 19 is no more. I\u2019ve always wanted kids, and I have three kids of my own now, and they\u2019ve lost their dad. \u2026 And it sucks.\u201d<\/p>\n Jones and Ojeh were college sweethearts who would\u2019ve celebrated 18 years of marriage this month. They shared son Kayin, 16, and fraternal twins Clara and Uche Jr., 13. <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m proud of my kids for how we\u2019ve been able to try to pull through,\u201d Jones said on Friday. \u201cBut it\u2019s horrible. It\u2019s just horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n Jones noted that there are times when she wishes she could just stay in bed and grieve, but she can\u2019t, because she has \u201cthree little beings who are watching me.\u201d When it comes to guiding her children through their grief, Jones tells them to let waves of sadness come and go. <\/p>\n \u201cWhat I\u2019ve told my kids is, it\u2019s almost like rain can\u2019t last forever. And so when the rain comes, in some ways I\u2019ve learned to just look up at the rain and let it be a cleansing rain and let it clear the air. I don\u2019t run away from crying anymore when it comes to grief.\u201d<\/p>\n Although Jones is allowing herself to feel the pain of losing her husband, she\u2019s also choosing to find moments of joy. My joy is real.\u2019 I was on television for almost a year with this [going on behind the scenes],\u201d she said. \u201cIf you see me now and you see me laughing, or you turn on the morning show and I\u2019m laughing or having a good time, you root for me, because I\u2019m fighting for my joy.\u201d<\/p>\n Jones also spoke about her relationship with her husband, noting that their connection only \u201cgot stronger\u201d when he was fighting for his life.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen he was dying, I would say, \u2018This sucks, and it\u2019s scary, but if you asked me [and told me] this was gonna be my fate, I would do it all over again,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Jones cohosts the third hour of \u201cToday,\u201d which airs weekdays on NBC at 9 a.m. ET. <\/b><\/i><\/p>\n Our journalism needs your support.
