VENICE, Italy (AP) \u2014 The 82nd Venice Film Festival<\/a> is coming to a close Saturday as its juries make final choices for the awards. The prizes, including nods for acting, directing and best picture, called the Golden Lion, will be handed out during an evening ceremony.<\/p>\n This year\u2019s competition lineup included many possible Oscar<\/a> heavyweights. Kathryn Bigelow set off a warning shot about nuclear weapons and the apparatus of decision-making with her urgent, and distressingly realistic, thriller \u201cA House of Dynamite.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Guillermo del Toro unveiled<\/a> his \u201cFrankenstein,\u201d a sumptuously gothic interpretation of the Mary Shelley classic, with Oscar Isaac portraying Victor Frankenstein as a romantic madman and Jacob Elodri, naive and raw, as the monster.<\/p>\n Park Chan-wook delighted with his darkly comedic \u201cNo Other Choice,\u201d<\/a> a satire about the desperation of white-collar workers competing for jobs.<\/p>\n Dwayne Johnson took a serious turn as a fighter grappling with addiction to painkillers and winner in the MMA\/UFC sports drama \u201cThe Smashing Machine,\u201d<\/a> while Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are strange and fierce as kidnapped and kidnapper in Yorgos Lanthimos\u2019s provocative \u201cBugonia.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n George Clooney and Adam Sandler<\/a> moved audiences as an aging movie star and his devoted manager on a soul-searching journey through Europe in \u201cJay Kelly,\u201d a ruthlessly truthful love letter to Hollywood, in all its ridiculousness and beauty.<\/p>\n Jude Law furrowed his brows as Vladimir Putin in \u201cThe Wizard of the Kremlin\u201d<\/a> and Amanda Seyfried put a human, feminist, face to the religious sect the shakers in \u201cThe Testament of Ann Lee.\u201d<\/p>\n Julia Roberts<\/a> also flexed her acting muscles as a Yale philosophy professor in the midst of a misconduct accusation against a colleague in \u201cAfter the Hunt,\u201d but neither she nor her castmates Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri and director, Luca Guadagnino, are eligible for Venice prizes. The film debuted out of competition.<\/p>\n Far from Hollywood, Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, had a late-festival smash with \u201cThe Voice of Hind Rajab,\u201d<\/a> about the 6-year-old girl killed in Gaza, which reportedly got a 22-minute standing ovation. The film is a shattering document of the Israel-Hamas war,<\/a> set entirely inside the dispatch center of the Palestine Red Crescent Society rescue service. It uses the real audio of Hind\u2019s call, while actors portray the first responders.<\/p>\n \u201cNebraska\u201d filmmaker Alexander Payne presided over the main competition jury, which included Brazilian actor Fernanda Torres, Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, French director St\u00e9phane Briz\u00e9, Italian director Maura Delpero, Chinese actor Zhao Tao and Romanian director Cristian Mungiu.<\/p>\n Both Lanthimos and del Toro have won the Golden Lion before, for \u201cPoor Things\u201d and \u201cThe Shape of Water,\u201d respectively. Those films also went on to win top Oscars, including best actress for Stone in \u201cPoor Things,\u201d and best picture and director for del Toro\u2019s \u201cThe Shape of Water.\u201d<\/p>\n Since 2014, the Venice Film Festival has hosted four best picture winners, including \u201cThe Shape of Water,\u201d \u201cBirdman,\u201d \u201cSpotlight” and \u201cNomadland.\u201d Last year, they had several eventual Oscar-winning films in the lineup, including Brady Corbet\u2019s \u201cThe Brutalist,\u201d<\/a> which won three including best actor for Adrien Brody,<\/a> Walter Salles\u2019 best international feature winner \u201cI\u2019m Still Here,\u201d<\/a> and the animated short \u201cIn the Shadow of the Cypress.\u201d<\/p>\n The previous Golden Lion winner, Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s English-language debut<\/a> \u201cThe Room Next Door,\u201d a smash at Venice with an 18-minute standing ovation, received no Oscar nominations.<\/p>\n ___<\/p>\n
