But they do adore a great awards contender.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMeanwhile, theatrical distributors are constantly assessing whether a title is worth the P&amp;A spend to ROI in what is a glacial recovering post-Covid box office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThis is further expounded by streamers\u2019 varying wants: Apple has infrequently bought in recent festivals opting to create content in-house, while Amazon prefers overseas rights. Netflix\u2019s most recent acquisition mandate, we hear, is buying global rights. That said, the streamer laid down $20 million for U.S. and partial offshore rights to Richard Linklater\u2019s Hit Man and $11M for Anna Kendrick\u2019s Woman of the Hour at TIFF 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOne conundrum that lingers in the marketplace is that some indie theatrical distributors are without a pay-one deal\/streaming partner, and the subset that\u2019s willing to pony up \u2014 sellers cite Hulu, HBO Max and Starz \u2014 is quite small and capped in cash. That said, there are plenty of theatrical distributors already armed with an SVOD deal, e.g., Sony Pictures Classics (Netflix), Searchlight (Hulu), Focus Features (Peacock), Neon (Hulu) and A24 (HBO Max), putting them in a feasible position to make a go at a title.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIt\u2019s not all bad out there; in fact, it\u2019s arguably getting better. There\u2019s an excitement from sellers about the new buyers in this fall\u2019s film festival marketplace, i.e., burgeoning distributors such as Black Bear Finance and Row K backed by Media Capital Technologies and led by former Paramount Global Distribution and Marketing boss Megan Colligan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe new David Ellison-led Paramount has publicly expressed its M.O. to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/08\/paramount-movies-priorities-top-gun-star-trek-1236480202\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1236480202\">build a feature slate of 15 releases next year and 20 annually<\/a> in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAfter making an earthquake at Cannes with its<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"1236403025\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/05\/jennifer-lawrence-robert-pattinson-die-my-love-cannes-mubi-1236403025\/\"> $24 million pickup of the Jennifer Lawrence movie Die, My Love<\/a>, all eyes remain on Mubi\u2019s next big buy at TIFF. Sellers are telling Deadline that the streamer-turned-theatrical distributor is eyeing more commercial fare after making a name for itself in the specialty space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe solid sales pitch is that if you\u2019re a streamer or motion picture distributor, it\u2019s a thriftier prospect to buy finished product than to mount an original production. As far as buyers go, if there\u2019s a critically acclaimed potential awards title, they\u2019ll quickly make room for it, like last fall\u2019s Venice Film Festival premiere The Brutalist from director Brady Corbet and his wife, producer\/screenwriter Mona Fastvold: <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"1236081595\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/09\/a24-acquires-venice-festival-silver-lion-winner-the-brutalist-1236081595\/\">A24 acquired U.S. <\/a>for $10M-$15M and dated it promptly for a December launch. With a $16.4M domestic take, 10 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"1236264399\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/01\/2025-oscars-nominations-list-1236264399\/\">Oscar nominations<\/a> (including Best Picture) and three wins including <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"1236309568\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/03\/adrien-brody-best-actor-longest-speech-oscars-history-1236309568\/\">Best Actor for Adrien Brody<\/a>, The Brutalist was by far one of the few theatrical acquisition successes from last year\u2019s fall film festival troika. (Corbet and Fastvold are back this year, with the latter in the director\u2019s seat this time, for the bawdy Shaker origins movie <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"1236502932\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/09\/the-testament-of-ann-lee-review-amanda-seyfried-mona-fastvold-folk-musical-1236502932\/\">The Testament of Ann Lee,<\/a> starring Seyfried. The pic world premiered at Venice to a great Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 85% fresh and will be playing TIFF.) Another A24 TIFF acquisition last year, the Paul Rudd comedy Friendship, for which the distributor <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/09\/a24-landing-toronto-film-festival-film-friendship-for-mid-7-figures-1236090399\/\">paid mid-seven figures<\/a>, generated $16.2M stateside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFestival reviews for these indie sales titles are like a Roman emperor\u2019s thumb edict in the Colosseum. Great reviews of course boost a pic\u2019s cost and expedite its prospects for the immediate awards season. Despite having an Oscar-winning director in Ron Howard and a starry cast of Sweeney, Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby and Ana de Armas, last year\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/08\/eden-review-jude-law-ana-de-armas-sydney-sweeney-steam-up-ron-howards-real-life-island-melodrama-1236493811\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1236493811\">Eden <\/a>at TIFF received lackluster reviews, which slowed the pic\u2019s path to finding a distribution home. What makes this title an intriguing piece of cinema? It\u2019s a gangster thriller with hardly any dialogue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSellers have redefined their idea of success post-pandemic: the days of overpriced acquisition deals hatched overnight are a thing of the past. Nowadays, success for an indie title doesn\u2019t mean selling during the run of the fest or even in a mid-seven-figure <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/range\/\" id=\"auto-tag_range\" data-tag=\"range\">range<\/a>. It took two months for Sundance\u2019s biggest world premiere, the Jennifer Lopez musical <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/01\/kiss-of-the-spider-woman-review-bill-condons-film-version-jennifer-lopez-sundance-film-festival-1236268769\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1236268769\">Kiss of the Spider Woman<\/a>, to find distribution at Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate, with LD Entertainment handling the pic\u2019s P&amp;A.
