Macaulay Culkin <\/a><\/strong>has fond memories of his time with John Candy<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n The former child actor said the late Canadian comedian was always looking out for him and his well-being. Macaulay and his brother Kieran Culkin have spoken openly about their father and the toxic relationship they had with him.<\/p>\n \u201cListen, even before the wave crested and the\u00a0Home Alone stuff<\/a> was happening, it was not hard to see how difficult my father was. It was no secret. He was already a monster,\u201d said Macaulay. His starring role in Home Alone made him a household name, with John having a small role in that movie.<\/p>\n He believes that John could sense his father wasn\u2019t an ideal role model. The Golden Globe nominee is opening up about his experiences with the late actor in the new Colin Hanks documentary John Candy: I Like Me.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he always had that really great instinct,\u201d Macaulay said of John in the documentary via People<\/a>. The 45-year-old says his dad became an \u201cinfamous monster\u201d as soon as Macaulay\u2019s fame and fortune grew. He adds that John always looked a little side-eyed at how his father treated Macaulay as if to say, \u2018Is everything alright over there? You doing good? Good day? Everything\u2019s alright? Everything good at home? Alright.\u2019<\/p>\n Macaulay calls that attitude \u201ca testament to the kind of man he was.\u201d He adds that the late actor had a \u201cpaternal\u201d presence. John had two children with his wife Rosemary Hobor, Christopher Michael and Jennifer Anne. In 1994 John died of a heart atack in Mexico during the final few days of filming the movie Wagons East.<\/p>\n Having a more fatherly figure like John is something Macaulay wishes he had more of<\/a> growing up.<\/p>\n \u201cI wish I got more of that in my life. It\u2019s important that I remember that. I remember John caring when not a lot of people did, \u201csaid Macaulay.<\/p>\n Looking back on his acting career<\/a>, Macaulay says Uncle Buck was one of his favorite projects to be a part of.<\/p>\n John Candy: I Like Me premiered on Thursday at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
