Four years later, Groban played the Bowl\u2019s annual July Fourth Fireworks Spectacular \u2014 but only as part of a program long on patriotic orchestral tunes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo these are kind of my first two proper solo shows\u201d at the iconic hillside amphitheater, he says. \u201cI\u2019m slowly working my way towards earning my induction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights, the dates will pair Groban, now 44, with the L.A. Phil nearly a quarter-century after the release of his self-titled 2001 debut, which he made under the tutelage of his mentor <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2024-11-01\/david-foster-hollywood-bowl-whitney-houston-natalie-cole-chicago-earth-wind-and-fire\">David Foster<\/a> (who also helped make global stars of Andrea Bocelli and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2022-03-24\/michael-buble-higher-album\">Michael Bubl\u00e9<\/a>). I love New York with all my heart, but it\u2019s not until you go out and touch grass somewhere that you realize just how noisy and crowded and busy it is there. In my 20s, I would open myself to whatever chaos the city would give me. As I\u2019ve gotten older, hearing myself think has become more important.<\/p>\n<p><b>Where do you do your best thinking?<\/b><br \/>I have a back room in my house where I can shut the door and I can play piano or meditate or I can look at my baseball cards or just listen to the birds chirp. I\u2019d say it\u2019s a man cave except it\u2019s not that cool.<\/p>\n<p><b>Baseball cards, huh?<\/b><br \/>I had shoeboxes full of all my favorite Dodgers as a kid \u2014 Orel Hershiser and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2024-10-22\/remembering-dodgers-legend-fernando-valenzuela\">Fernando Valenzuela<\/a> and Tommy Lasorda. This was the junk wax era, when Topps and Fleer and all these companies really overproduced because they thought there was big business in baseball cards. So the vast majority of them aren\u2019t worth anything now. But that\u2019s the way it should be when you\u2019re a kid. I wasn\u2019t looking at them for profit \u2014 I was looking at them because it was just fun to collect my team.<\/p>\n<p><b>My heart aches for the child who looks at them for profit.<\/b><br \/>I go to baseball card shops now and there are 10-year-olds haggling: \u201cNo, no, no, man \u2014 go on EBay, you\u2019ll see that card is down 10%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s the best card shop in L.A.?<\/b><br \/>There\u2019s a great one called Burbank Sportscards. It\u2019s massive \u2014 like a Walmart for sports cards. First time I went, I\u2019d had a particularly good day at work, and my girlfriend \u2014 bless her heart, she knows this is a passion of mine now \u2014 she was like, \u201cBabe, do you want to go to that new big card store?\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cWe can go to Burbank Sportscards? You mean it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Love this for you.<\/b><br \/>It\u2019s sad and it\u2019s beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><b>Musically, you\u2019ve been in a bit of a blue-eyed soul moment of late. Your last studio album had renditions of \u201cCelebrate Me Home\u201d and \u201cI Can\u2019t Make You Love Me,\u201d and there\u2019s an R&amp;B-ish new song on \u201cGems\u201d called \u201cBe Alright.\u201d<\/b><br \/>It\u2019s always been something I\u2019ve enjoyed tapping into vocally, but I have to be in the right hands, producer-wise, to feel comfortable going there. Just because you can doesn\u2019t mean you should.<\/p>\n<p><b>Oh, I think you should.<\/b><br \/>As singers, we all have a responsibility to ourselves and to our audience to make sure that everything we sing is coming from a place of sincerity. There are things I can do \u2014 I mean, I\u2019m a great imitator. One of the things I did early on in my life, before I started taking formal singing lessons, is I would just try to sound like everybody I listened to. And I realized that I had a talent for mimicking different styles and different voices.<\/p>\n<p><b>Can you do <\/b><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2024-05-28\/michael-mcdonald-paul-reiser-what-a-fool-believes-memoir-doobie-brothers\"><b>Michael McDonald<\/b><\/a><b>?<\/b><br \/>[<i>Sings<\/i>] \u201cYou don\u2019t know me but I\u2019m your brother \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>So that\u2019s a yes.<\/b><br \/>But with all the reverence in the world. He\u2019s one of my favorite singers \u2014 one of my favorite human beings. When I say, \u201cJust because you can doesn\u2019t mean you should,\u201d there are times when you can do something with your instrument, but it\u2019s coming from a place of wanting to prove something. You have an image, and sometimes ego takes over and you\u2019re like, \u201cI would like people to see me as this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As you get older, you start to learn when that meter goes off. I didn\u2019t know it as well earlier on. I love rock music, for instance, and I\u2019ve had opportunities to write with great rock artists that I\u2019ve loved. I\u2019ve enjoyed those sessions so much, but the end result of our collaboration ultimately would lean more towards what they\u2019re better singing than what I\u2019m better singing.<\/p>\n<p><b>Who we talking?<\/b><br \/>He may not even remember this, but I\u2019m a big System of a Down fan, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/books\/story\/2024-05-09\/system-of-a-down-singer-serj-tankians-new-book-details-bands-up-and-downs-and-what-fuels-his-activism\">Serj Tankian<\/a> and I got to know each other a little bit a long time ago. He\u2019s got kind of an operatic quality to some of the stuff he sings \u2014 very emotional and melodic music that he puts on top of the heaviness of System. So we were sending ideas back and forth at one point, and it was just one of those things where I was like, \u201cMan, I would love to hear Serj sing this. But I\u2019m not sure it\u2019s right for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>I bet Serj would say you should\u2019ve done it.<\/b><br \/>That\u2019s the thing \u2014 this is a one-sided criticism. Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p><b>If I\u2019m A&amp;R-ing your next album, I\u2019m putting you in the studio with Babyface.<\/b><br \/>Sure.<\/p>\n<p><b>Babyface says, \u201cJosh, today I want us to work on Luther Vandross\u2019 \u2018Here and Now.\u2019\u201d How do you respond?<\/b><br \/>I can\u2019t step to Luther. But when I talk about having a producer where you know you\u2019re in safe hands, Babyface would be one of those people. If he were to say, \u201cI\u2019d like to hear you sing this,\u201d I\u2019d do it in a heartbeat. But I can almost guarantee you that wouldn\u2019t happen [<i>laughs<\/i>].<\/p>\n<p><b>You seem to have gone out of your way to avoid calling \u201cGems\u201d a greatest-hits collection.<\/b><br \/>Because I\u2019m not a hitmaker. I have hit albums, but I don\u2019t have hit songs. I could say that\u2019s for better or for worse, but when I look back at my career and the audience I\u2019ve built and the opportunities I\u2019ve had \u2014 it\u2019s been for the better. Which songs have meant the most to fans? That was our guide for \u201cGems.\u201d Then there are songs that didn\u2019t make \u201cGems\u201d that are gonna go on something we\u2019re calling \u201cHidden Gems\u201d \u2014 though I joke with my manager that if I\u2019ve never had hits, isn\u2019t \u201cGems\u201d already \u201cHidden Gems\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Another thing I\u2019m working on \u2014 a few things kind of started at once \u2014 is an album of songs from films. I got asked by Francis Ford Coppola to sing the \u201cGodfather\u201d theme at his AFI lifetime achievement ceremony [in April], which was this a-ha moment about how much film music has meant to me in my singing career. So I had a dinner with [the record producer] Greg Wells, who was just finishing up the \u201cWicked\u201d movie, and we started talking about film songs we love.<\/p>\n<p><b>What are some must-haves?<\/b><br \/>There\u2019s no decided set list yet. But the songs I gravitate towards are the ones with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/music\/la-et-ms-michel-legrand-appreciation-20190127-story.html\">[Michel] Legrand<\/a>\/Scott Walker-y arrangements \u2014 music that\u2019s not shying away from the escapism of where these melodies take you. \u201cAs Time Goes By,\u201d from \u201cCasablanca,\u201d for example. I love \u201cWindmills of Your Mind,\u201d from \u201cThe Thomas Crown Affair.\u201d I sang \u201cSkyfall\u201d in Vegas.<\/p>\n<p><b>Free idea: \u201cHow Do You Keep the Music Playing.\u201d<\/b><br \/>That\u2019s a great song. What movie was that from? [<i>Picks up phone<\/i>] Lemme Wikipedia this.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/music\/la-et-ms-james-ingram-appreciation-20190130-story.html\"><b>James Ingram<\/b><\/a><b> and Patti Austin sang it. I think Legrand wrote it, maybe with the Bergmans?<\/b><br \/>Alan and Marilyn wrote it for the 1982 film \u201cBest Friends.\u201d It went to No. 5 on the AC chart and it was nominated for an Academy Award. It\u2019s interesting: When I did the \u201cStages\u201d album, they were all songs from musicals that people really knew. The thing about film songs is that half the time the song becomes more famous than the film.<\/p>\n<p><b>I saw <\/b><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2025-07-26\/diana-ross-hollywood-bowl-best-moments\"><b>Diana Ross at the Bowl<\/b><\/a><b> a few weeks ago. She did her song from the dinosaur movie \u201cLand Before Time.\u201d<\/b><br \/>Listen, a great song is a great song. I loved singing the end title to \u201cTroy,\u201d and nobody would think this guy needs to sing about gladiators.<\/p>\n<p><b>A bit of Grammy trivia for you: You\u2019ve lost the award for traditional pop vocal album three times, which I thought was a lot until I discovered that Barbra Streisand has lost 13 times.<\/b><br \/>That makes me feel a little better.<\/p>\n<p><b>Seems insane.<\/b><br \/>That does seem insane. You know, you sit at these things, and it\u2019s always great to be nominated, but it never hurts any less when you don\u2019t hear your name called.<\/p>\n<p><b>You\u2019re on Streisand\u2019s latest duets record.<\/b><br \/>This is our third duet. It\u2019s always such a master class to hear how she takes on a lyric. You can read it on the page, and you can hear the melody plunked out on a piano, but the way she decides to scoop into a note or to phrase a line \u2014 you just get goosebumps.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bob Dylan\u2019s on there as well \u2014 they do \u201cThe Very Thought of You.\u201d<\/b><br \/>The guy runs so deep as far as his interests and what he\u2019s wanted to do. Seeing him in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2024-01-29\/we-are-the-world-lionel-richie-bob-dylan-prince-netflix-greatest-night-in-pop-documentary\">that \u201cWe Are the World\u201d documentary<\/a>, I thought it was very touching to see someone like Dylan in a place of vulnerability. The fact that he was in the room and that he didn\u2019t turn it down \u2014 he\u2019s not my patient, I\u2019m just speculating \u2014 it shows that there\u2019s always been a part of him that\u2019s wanted to go beyond.
