His attitude changed over time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dave Meegan produced Marillion albums <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/the-inside-story-behind-marillions-brave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Brave;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Brave<\/em><\/a>, <em>Afraid Of Sunlight<\/em>, <em>Anoraknophobia<\/em> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/marillion-career-hit-single-didn-061102506.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Marbles;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><em>Marbles<\/em><\/a>, plus mixing 1997\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/marillion-were-facing-oblivion-then-063300267.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:This Strange Engine;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><em>This Strange Engine<\/em><\/a> \u2013 though his input goes far beyond sitting behind the studio glass and asking for more cowbell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That said, his first interaction with the band wasn\u2019t something he thought might ever lead to collaborative musical greatness. \u201cThey were typical rock stars,\u201d says Meegan with a laugh. \u201cOh God, yes: unbearable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In late 1983, Marillion were in Sarm East Studios in London recording <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/news\/no-drummer-no-time-no-songs-how-marillion-made-fugazi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fugazi;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Fugazi<\/em><\/a>. Meegan, in an embryonic stage of his career, was that album\u2019s tape op. \u201cThey were living the life,\u201d he remembers. \u201cThey were just full of drive and confidence; they kind of knew the world was theirs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThere were really big artists coming into Sarm all the time and it didn\u2019t faze them a bit. It felt as if it was <em>their<\/em> place, especially <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/beginning-2010-lowest-ever-remember-115211215.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fish;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">Fish<\/a>. But you could tell they could back it up. I must have been impressed, because I later recommended <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/earning-good-money-marillion-were-091753509.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ian Mosley;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">Ian Mosley <\/a>to play drums on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/music\/articles\/claudia-br-cken-susanne-freytag-122626342.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Propaganda;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">Propaganda<\/a>\u2019s <em>Dream Within A Dream<\/em> for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/fans-understood-price-had-pay-060307580.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Trevor Horn;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">Trevor Horn<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ten years on, and the band \u2013 now fronted by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/ten-of-the-best-from-hogarth-era-marillion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Steve Hogarth;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Steve Hogarth<\/a> \u2013 and Meegan were in a whole other world, about to create something brilliant in the shape of <em>Brave<\/em>. But they were bogged down by the process of writing, recording, rewriting and re-recording; lost in the details, lost in a residential ch\u00e2teau, lost in France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meegan\u2019s intricate approach to poring over each take combined with a band stuck in a stop-start rut, plus an antsy EMI A&amp;R man who was eager to see some quick and cheap results, made for a protracted period in some hideous limbo. \u201cIt\u2019s a great record,\u201d says Meegan, \u201cbut at the cost of normal life sanity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI think it was the same for everybody; you get yourself wrapped up in it, and you exclude yourself from reality. You\u2019re calling home less, sort of fading off into the distance. It must be a why monks go to a monastery \u2013 to take their religion to another level. It was a great experiment, and certain tracks would never have happened without that. But it was certainly not to be repeated. Two albums like that would break a band up, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As fastidious in life as he is in his mixing and production, Meegan has checked his diaries regarding the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/music\/articles\/said-t-people-think-christian-050300845.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Afraid Of Sunlight;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><em>Afraid Of Sunlight<\/em> <\/a>sessions before we speak; he\u2019s check that, yes, one of Marillion\u2019s greatest and most enduring albums was wrapped up and recorded in a thrifty three months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meegan sayd the band, fresh off the <em>Brave<\/em> tour, were in peak musical form \u2013 \u201cthey were like jazz musicians\u201d \u2013 and keen to get to work in their new Racket Club studio space. It was also the continuation of a way of doing things the band had developed with <em>Brave<\/em>: jamming and writing together then letting Meegan distill the recorded elements down to their essence, and translating that into songs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s down to memory,\u201d says Meegan. \u201cI\u2019ve got more mental RAM than they have. And since producing <em>Marbles<\/em> I\u2019ve had a diagnosis of autism. Now it makes sense that every time a bit of music was jammed, I\u2019d go home, log it, give it a name. I can remember every piece of music I\u2019ve ever heard since about the age of about two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cSo when Marillion played something, I\u2019d go, \u2018Oh my God, that would be so good with this.\u2019 And then I\u2019d sort of rough it up for them physically so they could hear it. And that was the start of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"mb-4 border-l-2 pl-5 italic text-tertiary\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I love that Californian vibe on Afraid of Sunrise \u2013 even though it was recorded during a snowstorm<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He also pushed to include both tracks<em> Afraid Of Sunrise<\/em> and <em>Afraid Of Sunlight<\/em> on the album. \u201cI felt like Solomon and the two children \u2013 there was no way I was going to cut one in half. Also, everybody loves what we\u2019re playing on both versions, so it wasn\u2019t that hard to convince the band to include both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a concept album, but there\u2019s definitely a singular idea going through it. So using the same lyric part across both musical ideas ties it together somehow; it makes you look at the album differently. I love that Californian vibe of <em>Sunrise<\/em> \u2013 even though it was recorded during a snowstorm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But it wasn\u2019t all plain sailing. \u201cI used to always say that <em>Out Of This World<\/em> was haunted,\u201d the producer says, referring to the song about Donald Campbell\u2019s fatal water speed record attempt in 1967. \u201cIt was weird. Dropouts and disks failing all the time; and even when we transferred it all to two-inch tape, the channels on the desk would stop working.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI was trying to put the mix down one time and the guitar had just gone, and the actual panel on the desk had just died. I was really careful to make sure that when we put down final versions, we actually <em>did<\/em> get a final version.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"mb-4 border-l-2 pl-5 italic text-tertiary\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I realised it\u2019s a bloody good album \u2013 you know, \u2018How did we do that?!\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meegan admits: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t one of my favourite Marillion albums after we\u2019d finished it. It was only when I went back to it in 1999, when it was remastered, that I realised it\u2019s a bloody good album \u2013 you know, \u2018How did we do that?!\u2019 Which is good in a way, because after we\u2019d done <em>Marbles<\/em>, I was so happy with that, it helped me decide to stop working.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI knew <em>Marbles<\/em> would let me go out on a creative high.
