More stars captured across the 2025 Venice Film Festival: Rampling, there for Jim Jarmusch\u2019s Father Mother Sister Brother\u2014\u201cShe was surprised that I wanted to take her portrait\u201d\u2014and The Souffleur\u2019s Dafoe. \u201cI\u2019m used to seeing him around at Cannes and Venice,\u201d says Planes. \u201cI don\u2019t get surprised anymore. He\u2019s common for me now! I bump into him randomly at the stairs of the Hotel Excelsior, we chat a bit, and he poses.\u201d Next comes Frankenstein\u2019s Christoph Waltz, After the Hunt\u2019s Sevigny, and Mich\u00e8le Lamy, who was mostly in Venice for vacation and vibes. \u201cI ran into her on the festival promenade in her flip-flops. We greeted each other and I was glad to see her outside Paris Fashion Week,\u201d Planes says. \u201cIn the following days, I would see her at several movies.\u201d<\/p>\n
Celebrities aside, Planes finds the city\u2019s fabulous, well-dressed older women\u2014recalling sciura, a name for Milan\u2019s elegant old ladies\u2014inspiring to capture. \u201cThey dress in extravagant dresses and hats, and do the most spectacular makeup. They go to the festival to show themselves off and have fun. I don\u2019t know if they\u2019re interested in cinema, but they\u2019re there every festival giving it all and serving looks,\u201d says Planes. \u201cThere are some I see from festival to festival, from country to country.\u201d One woman in particular wears a gargantuan sculptural fascinator with fresh flowers. \u201cIf she\u2019s there to get into the cinema,\u201d Planes says, \u201cI don\u2019t want to imagine the person sitting behind her.\u201d<\/p>\n
Outside the festival\u2019s main hubs, crowds of fans gathered, wielding phones and screaming at the sights. \u201cSuddenly you see the nature of the human being,\u201d says Planes. \u201cYou see people running, faces of joy, of passion. Always, those faces come accompanied by a camera in hand that wants to immortalize their face next to the celebrity\u2019s face. That struggle to get the photo and the contrast with the celebrity\u2019s anxiety makes the scene a spectacle worthy of a movie itself.\u201d<\/p>\n
Planes captured dense rows of fans at the premiere fences, vying for the now very vintage practice of getting autographs. \u201cI\u2019m obsessed with a guy I first saw three years ago in Cannes, who\u2019s always running around the festival asking for photos and autographs,\u201d says Planes. \u201cHe only dedicates himself to that. There\u2019s also another guy who goes to all the festivals, who always puts a stuffed animal on his head. Each festival he wears a different one, and he\u2019s always behind the fence. I don\u2019t think he even goes to see movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
