It has been 10 days since Saturday Night Live <\/em>cast member Devon Walker<\/a> announced that, after three seasons, he is parting ways<\/a> with the legendary sketch comedy show\u2014which he described as \u201creally cool\u201d part of the time and \u201ctoxic as hell\u201d at others.<\/p>\n Now that he has had more than a week to digest the news, Walker is clarifying his initial comments on what he described as the \u201cf***ed up lil family\u201d he and his fellow cast members created on the long-running NBC series.<\/p>\n In a new interview with Variety<\/em><\/a>, Walker said \u201cI\u2019m so grateful to have been at the show. I\u2019ll be eternally grateful, for the good parts and the bad parts. I\u2019m glad to have seen what that place is.\u201d<\/p>\n The 34-year-old comedian, who is perhaps best known for his portrayal of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, also shared that it means a lot that fans are upset about his departure, \u201cbecause if you\u2019re sad about it, that means I made something that meant something to you.\u201d However, he also admitted that the overreaction to the so-called \u201cSNL <\/em>exodus<\/a>\u201d feels kind of \u201csilly\u201d to him.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m still here,\u201d said Walker. \u201cI\u2019m still going to make stuff. The show is, by its nature, a temporary job. The show is made to be left. I left it, but I\u2019m not going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n Still, Walker stands by his \u201ctoxic\u201d comments. When pressed to describe some of what he sees as the specific issues with the show, he simply responded: \u201cIf you read about the show, if you\u2019re knowledgeable about it at all, you can certainly pick up on things that are toxic about it. The show hasn\u2019t changed much in all the years they\u2019ve been doing it. There are things that went down on the show that I wouldn\u2019t talk about for free. There are a lot of things I\u2019m still trying to find the right avenue to go into detail about.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI think\u2026 [long pause<\/em>] there is a measure of humanity that the show could benefit from,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n For the incoming cast members who will make their debut during SNL<\/em>\u2019s 51st season, Walker has some advice. \u201cMake the stuff that feels the truest to you,\u201d he says. \u201cMake the stuff that feels as close to your sensibility as possible. There may be some aspects of your creativity that aren\u2019t completely in line with what the show wants to do, but at SNL<\/em> and in general, the closer you can be to your truth as an artist, the more fulfilled you will feel.
