Jim Jarmusch<\/a> first premiered a film at the Venice International Film Festival<\/a> more than 20 years ago.<\/p>\n And this weekend, the indie film stalwart won his first Golden Lion.<\/p>\n Jarmusch received the top prize at the prestigious film festival Saturday for \u201cFather Mother Sister Brother<\/a>,\u201d his first film to compete for the honor.<\/p>\n The writer-director filmed part of the movie in New Jersey (see location details below).<\/p>\n The lauded work stars Oscar winner Cate Blanchett<\/a>, Adam Driver<\/a>, Vicky Krieps<\/a> (\u201cPhantom Thread\u2019), Mayim Bialik<\/a>, Charlotte Rampling<\/a>, Indya Moore<\/a> (\u201dPose”), Luka Sabbat<\/a> (\u201cGrown-ish\u201d), Sarah Greene<\/a> (\u201cBad Sisters\u201d), Fran\u00e7oise Lebrun<\/a> (\u201cThe Mother and the Whore\u201d) and Jarmusch\u2019s frequent collaborator, singer-songwriter Tom Waits<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cFather Mother Sister Brother\u201d is a triptych \u2014 an anthology film in three parts (watch trailer below).<\/p>\n FMSB<\/p>\n Three different stories trace the bonds between adult children and their connections with their parents.<\/p>\n Production took place in Dublin, Paris and New Jersey, where filming began in Passaic County in 2023.<\/p>\n Jarmusch filmed the \u201cfather\u201d section of the movie in West Milford at Two Pond Farm<\/a> on Weaver Road as well as on Weaver Road between Macopin and Otterhole roads, the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission tells NJ Advance Media.<\/p>\n Jarmusch, 72, sported his usual dark shades with his distinctive shock of white hair as he accepted the Golden Lion<\/a> Saturday in Venice.<\/p>\n \u201cOh sh–,\u201d he said, per Variety.<\/p>\n \u201cAs filmmakers, we\u2019re not motivated by competition, but this is something I truly appreciate<\/a>,\u201d the director said of the honor for his \u201cquiet film<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n FMSB<\/p>\n \u201cArt does not have to address politics directly to be political,\u201d he added. \u201cIt can engender empathy<\/a>, which is the first step toward solving our problems.\u201d<\/p>\n Mubi<\/a> will release \u201cFather Mother Sister Brother<\/a>\u201d in theaters Dec. 24.<\/p>\n The production reported spending $4,689,400 in New Jersey and received a $1,682,003 tax credit, per the state Economic Development Authority.<\/p>\n It\u2019s just the latest of the director\u2019s movies to film in Jersey.<\/p>\n Jarmusch\u2019s history of filming in the Garden State stretches back to his second film in the 1980s.<\/p>\n FMSB<\/p>\n His local credits include the 2016 Paterson-set<\/a> movie \u201cPaterson<\/a>,\u201d starring Adam Driver<\/a>.<\/p>\n Before that, there was the 2005 film \u201cBroken Flowers<\/a>\u201d starring Bill Murray<\/a> (Mahwah, Fort Lee, Bedminster, Alexandria, Newark, Paterson, Somerville, Wayne and Teterboro); the 1999 movie \u201cGhost Dog: The Way of the Samurai<\/a>,\u201d starring Forest Whitaker<\/a> (North Bergen and Jersey City); and the 1984 movie \u201cStranger Than Paradise<\/a>\u201d (Hoboken).<\/p>\n Director, actor, writer and producer Sara Driver, Jarmusch\u2019s longtime partner and creative collaborator, grew up in Westfield.<\/p>\n \u201cFather Mother Sister Brother\u201d has yet another Jersey connection in veteran cinematographer Frederick Elmes<\/a>, who hails from Mountainside.<\/p>\n Elmes made his feature debut in David Lynch<\/a>\u2019s astonishing 1977 feature directorial debut \u201cEraserhead<\/a>\u201d and first worked with Jarmusch on his 1991 film \u201cNight on Earth<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Last year\u2019s Golden Lion winner was “The Room Next Door<\/a>,\u201d Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/a>\u2019s first English-language feature. That movie, starring Tilda Swinton<\/a> and Julianne Moore<\/a>, also filmed in New Jersey<\/a>.<\/p>\n The most recent Golden Lion honoree to win the Oscar for best picture<\/a> was \u201cNomadland<\/a>,\u201c which has yet another Jersey connection.<\/p>\n The 2020 film, for which Chlo\u00e9 Zhao<\/a> won the Oscar for best director<\/a>, stars Frances McDormand<\/a>, who won best lead actress<\/a> for her performance. The movie is based on the book \u201cNomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century<\/a>\u201d by Jessica Bruder<\/a>, who grew up in Montclair<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201c<\/i>Father Mother Sister Brother<\/i><\/a>,\u201d rated R, runs 1 hour and 50 minutes and will open in theaters Dec. 24<\/i>.<\/p>\n Thank you for reading.
