Now-former The White Lotus<\/em> composer Crist\u00f3bal Tapia de Veer won the Emmy Award for his theme song for the HBO series\u2019 third season Saturday, despite the track sparking a disagreement with creator Mike White that resulted in Tapia de Veer\u2019s exit from the show.<\/p>\n Tapia de Veer has now twice won the Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music for The White Lotus<\/em>\u2019 first and third seasons, with an Outstanding Music Composition for a Series win in-between for the series\u2019 second season.<\/p>\n More from Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n The composer\u2019s win Saturday was surprising, however, given the behind-the-scenes arguments that spilled out into a very public drama between Tapia de Veer and White, who initially butted heads over the third season\u2019s controversial and radically different theme, including the removal of the fan-loved \u201cooh-loo-loo-loos.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cPeople are furious about the change of the theme, and I thought that was interesting,\u201d Tapia de Veer said. \u201cI texted the producer and I told him that it would be great to, at some point, give them the longer version with the \u2018ooh-loo-loo-loos,\u2019 because people will explode if they realize that it was going there anyway. He thought it was a good idea. But then Mike cut that \u2014 he wasn\u2019t happy about that.\u201d Tapia de Veer eventually released the uncut version<\/a>, dubbed \u201cEnlightenment,\u201d on his own YouTube channel.<\/p>\n \u201cMike gives Cristo a lot of creative freedom, especially with the themes,\u201d music supervisor Gabe Hilfer told Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> after Season Three\u2019s theme premiered. \u201cHe\u2019ll say, \u2018How do you want to interpret the theme this year? How do you want to do it?\u2019 They go back and forth and they have a conversation about it. It\u2019s a whole process.\u201d<\/p>\n However, this time around, that \u201cconversation\u201d turned into creative differences that ultimately resulted in Tapia de Veer opting to leave the show prior to the inevitable Season Four<\/a>. However, due to the bad blood, Tapia de Veer didn\u2019t directly inform White of his decision, instead revealing his intentions to the crew and in a New York Times<\/em> interview that preceded the third season\u2019s finale.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s kind of weird right now because I announced to the team a few months ago that I was not coming back, that I was leaving,\u201d Tapia de Veer told the\u00a0Times<\/em>. \u201cI didn\u2019t tell Mike for various reasons; I wanted to tell him just at the end for the shock and whatever. Except I told the whole editorial team and music editor and producer and all that, but I didn\u2019t think that they were going to tell him. At some point he heard about that.\u201d<\/p>\n In a subsequent interview on the Howard Stern Show<\/em><\/a>, White lashed out at Tapia de Veer. \u201cI knew he wasn\u2019t a team player and that he wanted to do it his way. I was thrown that he would go to the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0to shit on me and the show three days before the finale,\u201d White said. \u201cIt was kind of a bitch move.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI honestly don\u2019t know what happened, except now I\u2019m reading his interviews because he decided to do some P.R. campaign about him leaving the show,\u201d he added. \u201cIn reading the interviews, I just realized\u2026 I just don\u2019t think he respected me. I think he basically wants people to know he\u2019s edgy and dark and I\u2019m\u2026 I watch reality TV.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the initial outcry over the changed theme and the ensuing beef between the parties involved, Emmy voters still deemed the song worthy of an award Saturday.
